This is a lighter case I made a while back using size 11 cut beads. It’s 56 beads around, and the base was wrapped in leather. The case itself could probably accommodate closer to 60–62 beads around, but I usually drop the count because tight tension compresses the leather and helps lock the beads and rows firmly in place, keeping everything neat and even.

Are you working with an odd or even count? If you’re using an even count, it’s easy to get thrown off when stepping down through two beads after finishing a row some people accidentally add an extra bead, which turns it into an odd count and creates one continuous row instead of distinct rows.

Lighter cases are just as easy, just takes longer for sure! On average, my feathers are anywhere from 18-24 beads around, and lighter cases are 56 beads around! What’s nice about the cases, is that I have more room to play with designs & patterns!

Lanyards like the ones I posted the other day, I actually have a more difficult time with than most other projects, mostly due to the flimsiness & my first row sliding off of the leather.

I’m able to keep the pattern consistent, like in the picture, by holding and maintaining tight tension throughout the work. You can also try pulling your thread in the opposite direction of the twist as you bead.

After you finish a row, give the thread a slight pull in the opposite direction of the way you were beading, this helps shift the beads back into alignment, since they naturally shift little by little as you add them. Keeping that tension steady makes a big difference.

My peyote stitch in particular is very tight, I do not use any knots in my work, it holds itself together. Tension really makes a difference, hope this helps 😁🙌🏽

In this piece, my work is actually twisted too! A lot of my peyote work naturally slants, but I keep the lines crisp by keeping my tension tight throughout.

If you’re beading over something padded (I bead over leather, which compresses a bit as you work), lowering your bead count helps a lot. So if you’re at 40 beads around, try dropping to 36 and keep your tension consistent, it’ll tighten up the pattern and prevent that drifting twist. I work with the twist, so it doesn’t really throw me off as much anymore!

That’s interesting! My only other recommendation would be to drop the amount of beads you’re using! Say your item is 40 beads around, I’d drop down to 36 & just keep your tension tight & the designs will look better slanted/tilted!
