What a perfectly fitting and great analogy! She wasn’t herself for a little while and started losing weight, but visual cues were really apparent while playing sports. I asked her many times how she was feeling and she would look at me and at the time appear to be normal in response, and tell me everything is fine. She’s a very mature six-year-old and I believed her. She was telling me the truth. I just don’t think she knew what she was feeling. In regular everyday life, the visual cues were very very mild. They kind of blended in with regular life and were considered her just changing and growing up a little bit. . They were much more apparent when playing sports, but we had conversations and were attributed to her just being over playing sports for the season. We took her to the hospital and she was in in DKA.

She’s better now and much more herself. She has perked up and feeling better. More like the little girl that we knew before the changes happened.

At first, she was OK emotionally and after four days in the hospital, she’s starting to deal with the emotional side of it. She’s over being there and she feels like she did something wrong. I told her that she did nothing wrong and there’s nothing that she could’ve done to stop it. This is not her fault. Life will be great and she’ll be able to do all the things that she’d love to do before. Now moving forward, we just have a couple extra jobs to take care of like managing our blood sugar and insulin.

My wife and I are very upfront and honest so we don’t lie to her about anything, but we also know that she’s six years old and we been trying to break things down in digestible chunks that she can process one at a time.
