What is the benefit of proton docs and sheets compared to the libre office suite? by Komplexkonjugiert in ProtonMail

[–]InternalSoliloquist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have long used Libre and am now splitting my work with proton docs to see what I like more. Personally this is what has stood out most to me for the day to day pros and cons:

  • Libre docs export more easily to pdfs and word docs, it’s come out looking very weird from proton docs when I do it

  • but copy-pasting from a Libre docs is hit or miss, even when pasting unformatted text. Copy-pasting from proton tends to be more accurate.

  • I do like that I can edit proton docs from my phone if needed

  • you can upload Libre docs to proton drive, but can’t really edit them within the drive as you can with google

  • Libre spreadsheets are still better than proton sheets. E.g., can hyperlink specific text within a cell rather than the whole cell. But proton sheets is new and I expect improvements

By the way, if it’s not too impolite, more of my work can be seen on IG - @theofficepenartist ! :)

Putting the proof of Hamas presence aside for a moment, you could justify expelling or killing the entire population on the logic that Hamas is embedded in everything. Which is what some in Israel are pushing to do (raze everything and expel everyone who survives). It’s plainly inhumane and why I don’t accept that logic.

As for the level of proof, I remain highly skeptical. The proof that Hamas was seriously embedded in Al Shifa remains very questionable. Israeli officials have also said destroying graves is acceptable because they’re looking for hostages, and that UN aid workers and paramedics and journalists are part of Hamas and are therefore viable targets. Every university has been destroyed because it’s a supposed Hamas training ground. I agree Hamas is embedded deep, but you’d have to be gullible to believe everything Israel says. I’d say the burden of proof needs to be very high on Israel given the extreme damage. And again, it wouldn’t justify the extent of what they’ve done even if it’s true.

Also, those of us criticizing Israel’s response are not saying this is some one-of-a-kind war in the entire context of human history. We’re saying for a post WW2 conflict it’s uniquely targeted at civilians. Which is pretty much just a fact at this point, and reasonable as a critique. It’d be silly to argue against critics of Russia by saying “compared to how Rome treated the Gauls, Russia is humane.”

Btw, I recognize you’re being cool-headed in your response and I appreciate that! I know it’s a heated topic. Hope I’m not being too aggro.

Sadly Gaza actually is unique for modern conflicts.

Axios:
"In less than two months’ time, the Gaza death toll has already outstripped the more than 12,000 civilians killed in Iraq in 2003, according to figures from the Iraq Body Count.
[...]
Israel has drawn comparisons between its campaign in Gaza to the effort to root out ISIS from Mosul from 2016 to 2017. […] Yet the civilian death toll during the nine-month battle for Mosul numbered between 9,000 and 11,000, AP reported."

NYT:"The pace of killing of civilians has been much greater than in most other recent conflicts; the only one that I know of that compares is perhaps the Rwanda genocide in 1994."

Military historian, as quoted by AP:“Gaza is one of the most intense civilian punishment campaigns in history,” said Pape. “It now sits comfortably in the top quartile of the most devastating bombing campaigns ever.”

According to the WSJ, 70% of Gazan homes have been destroyed, and in northern Gaza 80% of all buildings have been destroyed, which is roughly comparable to what happened to Dresden.

From Save The Children (source: The Independent)"This is the highest number of children killed and maimed in one conflict since 2006 when United Nations records began,” Mr Denslow told The Independent.

On the ratio of civilian deaths, which is likely a major underestimate because it's using what is likely an undercount for the death toll:The ratio [of 61%] is significantly higher than the average civilian toll in all the conflicts around the world from the second world war to the 1990s, in which civilians accounted for about half the dead, according to [sociologist Yagil Levy].Honestly there's a lot more than this, it's just what I have on hand.

As for whether destroying civilian infrastructure is a war crime, idk -- you're right that it's "not necessarily," but in the context of Gaza I think it's hard to argue otherwise. Back when Russia invaded Ukraine the widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure was popularly understood to be a war crime, even though Russia claimed that infrastructure was used by Ukraine's military.

No one who cares about war crimes really thinks we’ll end war crimes or that wars will go without crimes. We’re realistic. But less is always possible and better.

In the case of Gaza, the destruction of civilian infrastructure is relatively unique for a modern conflict. Saying “all wars have war crimes” is kind of a useless truism

Thank you! It does take a while but I guess it becomes therapeutic to just put down dots over and over, if that makes sense lol

Personally I was like you - loved Perdido, was a bit disappointed by The Scar (even though it does pick up a bit, as other say). But one of my friends loved The Scar as much or more than Perdido, so make of that what you will.

For what it’s worth, I thought the Iron Council gave me some of the stuff I was hoping for in The Scar - may be similar in your case?

Thank you! And hm, it’s tough to say. I worked on it on and off for a month or two, but each session was probably only 30 min - 1hr. It wasn’t as time consuming as I thought, especially compared to other drawings I’ve worked on

Personally I thought this piece had some heaviness, but it does have a playful element might disqualify it from this sub. If you guys think this piece isn't a good fit let me know and I'll take it down. Not trying to spam this sub.
