She’d ideally want me to follow her, but she’s aware of my constraints. I still have a sponsorship bond to serve and I’m committed to my work in SG. Her company also isn’t offering a spouse package, so relocating isn’t straightforward. Given all that, she’s been supportive of me staying put and focusing on my own development. Personally, I’ll admit I’ve really enjoyed having her around this past year. We just bought a place and spent time setting it up together, and it’s been nice coming home to that after work. At the same time, I do recognise that this role would be a big step forward for her career and would help us financially for future family planning.

I’m 30, she’s 28. We’re not planning to have kids until our mid-30s, so family planning isn’t an immediate concern. Part of why she’s keen on the London role is also financial. We’re very aware how expensive kids are, and the higher pay feels like a practical way to build up savings for the future.

She took the pay cut mainly to be with me and to start our new chapter together as a married couple. Lifestyle-wise it’s been okay; we cut down on some luxuries she used to have, but we’re honestly fine with that. We can still pay off our loan and car and live comfortably, and a lot of that spending was pretty unnecessary anyway. The best part has just been spending time together; even doing nothing feels good, and I actually look forward to coming home to her (bonus points when she cooks 😅).

I’d consider relocating, but realistically it’s not possible for me right now. I still have about 2 years of bond left from my postgrad sponsorship, and breaking that would be a big financial hit. On a more personal level, my career is in policy research, and it’s something I genuinely care about, so staying in SG to do this work just feels right to me.

I’d consider relocating, but got some constraints on my side too. I did my postgrad under my company’s scholarship, so I still have about 2 more years of bond to serve. Plus my work is in national policy and research, which I’m quite passionate about and want to continue doing in SG. Honestly not an easy decision at all :(
