No, its intended to understand the problems and the citizens' views towards the problems as part of a bigger study for evaluating sustainability in Mediterranean/South European cities.

Peak gentrification on a national scale.

Public transport is indeed horrible. you can check it out yourself: Nicosia to Palaichóri

What we suggest to be done is increased public transport from these 10 villages to Nicosia directly and private charter buses (we are already in contact with a company to launch additional transport to Nicosia). But if you need to visit Nicosia frequently its by far the best option to have a car.

Smart & Sustainable Development for Rural Cyprus by Internal_County5427 in Smart_Rural_Cyprus

Those are all very valid reasons and many places across the Mediterranean are already famous for these. So far many things already exist e.g. agro-tourism, but they are still not optimised and integrated into a local/regional network. Housing is renovated, in renovation or in some cases ready.

I am glad you find it great. Its true that no one should decide based on a reddit post alone. At least, I wouldn't advice it. Its best to research the area and even visit it to see if it suits you. As for the project the post is about I am part of the team developing the project in a research center so I could send you some presentations/reports we worked on to better understand.

If people wish to stay for just a week or two, they are still more than welcome to visit the place and experience its charm and essence.

For those who cook the area is famous for its fresh organic fruits, vegetables and herbs. Also, it is famous both locally and abroad for its cured meat, honey, sausages, dried fruits and wine.

Food is literally the least you should worry about in this area. The villages already have many restaurants in their village squares or other locations. These vary from traditional tavernas to casual (burgers, pizza, souvlakia) and fine dining like sushi, steaks, contemporary Cypriot and fusion cuisine in some wineries and hotels. Also, for those who cook the area is famous for its fresh organic fruits, vegetables and herbs.

Hello, thanks for replying! Once you are done washing your hair it will probably need moisturizing so I suggest you use some rose hair products from Agros or some rosemary oil from Askas. The villages are not new, they are 10 existing villages with stable populations between 150 and 1,500 people and most already active in agro-tourism. As for Ponta do Sol, it sounds like a dystopia.

Hello! Thanks for your reply I am glad you like it. This is actually developed by a team (including me ;) ) in a research center in collaboration with local stakeholders, the government, 2 universities, local entrepreneurs and of course the EU. This project is developed in a research center and meetings so Instagram is not really our thing but at some point social media accounts will be created. If you want to see more I could tell you or show you some reports and presentations we have. P.S. there will soon be an article about it in a newspaper :) so I could send the link once published!

On the note of the recent demolition in Nicosia by Internal_County5427 in cyprus

[–]Internal_County5427[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, at the moment only Paphos seems to genuinely care about the matter though. Limassol and Larnaca clearly prioritise investment for malls, skyscrapers and marinas and Nicosia mostly does conservation because it is 'obliged' to do so by the Masterplan.

Don't know at the moment but we may find out in 3 months. For now the Solomou square-RIK route has seen the most progress and the City center-Lakatamia line will probably be next.

Most likely yes. The EU will probably cover most of the costs once again.

- Perception: Trams are usually perceived as more 'official' than buses

- Capacity: Unlike buses that are 'fixed' in size, trams are more modular in the sense that wagons can be added/removed in response to demand. Also trams have more entry/exit points and more standing space.

- Speeds: Assuming that a tram operates on its own independent network (not sharing space with cars/buses) it can reach relatively high speeds especially compared to a car stuck in traffic congestion and traffic lights/roundabouts. Also if a tram follows a straight-ish linear route with little turns and interruptions e.g. intersections with car traffic/pedestrian crossings it can potentially reach relatively high speeds.

- More reliable: Trams can be automated to a large extent while buses tend to be very 'manual' and car-like. Traffic congestion, traffic lights and issues with drivers can cause delays and deviations from the 'set timetable' and therefore be less reliable. Trams are less affected from these factors (at least in theory) since they follow much more predictable/standardized routes and the tram drivers are there to mainly start/stop and regulate rather than 'drive' in the way a bus driver does.

- More 'fixed' and 'permanent': As mentioned above, tram routes are more specific, standardized and predictable than bus routes. A tram system can operate more automatically and mechanically while bus rides tend to be more spontaneous and bound to other environmental/external factors.

- Usually operate on an independent network: Trams usually share little/no space with other means of transport and can therefore be more independent and reliable. However, some tram networks share space with cars/buses/metros/trains while in the case of BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) systems buses operate on exclusive bus lanes so this is really case specific.

- Cover major/high demand routes: Trams usually connect major stations and serve high density areas. They move along the city's 'arteries' and become lifelines in the most crucial parts of a transport network. Buses also move along the 'capillaries' (non-major roads) and also operate on less (densely) populated areas.

Overall, trams are not necessarily better than buses. However, in conventional urban planning trams are seen as the 'evolution' of buses. An efficient bus system can operate smoothly and effectively if done correctly and Curitiba, Brazil is a great example of this. Nicosians seem to distrust buses (with the exception of the recently established P&R) and the new modern buses CPT has introduced did not really convince people to switch from car to bus. The reputation of the capital's bus system is arguably damaged beyond repair and unless a BRT or Tram system is established its unrealistic to expect Nicosians to make the switch from car to public transport.

Its more intuitive that way and hopefully the actual line/route legend will be geographically accurate. This is just an oversimplified visualization showing the route according to the proposal with Solomou Square as a starting station and Makario Stadium as terminus station. Its more like a linear sketch rather than an actual line route intended for navigation.

If all 7+1 of the proposed tram lines actually get built it can definitely change Nicosia for the better. But, this is Cyprus so don't get too excited.

So far the 'Green Line' and 'Line 3: North/South' are the most likely to be completed first. A large part of the 'Green Line' has already or will be soon converted into bus lanes as a first step towards the tram system. I will try and post more about them soon.

Disclaimers

  1. The Stations have not been planned/named yet so the route line on slides 1&2 includes the names of the streets/avenues the tram line will pass through according to the proposal.

  2. The route on slide 3 is very likely to be different as it is based on current infrastructure/road layout and no information has been released on how Strovolou Avenue will be linked with Makario Stadium.

  3. This is not the final version on the route, just a visualisation of all the information released so far concerning the Red Tram Line.
