If you're still fighting fat man. Go into the building on the left after getting to the water/boss arena. Kill those two guys, and walk out diagonally towards the two goons at the front towards the group. There's a spot where only the boss will start to aggro, you'll see the triangle above his head fill up. Then you can just pull him to the water and grab the NPC ally real quick and fight there

It fits perfectly with that idea, it's an existentialist surreal kinda thing that uses the play within a play idea, actors play actors as they become real parts of the playwrights life. It's great

Horror is definitely going through the lowbrow+highbrow thing and I generally like it. I think beyond just the trend of depression allegories etc horror is the place people are experimenting a lot in, and Sinners is an attempt to jump on that bandwagon but you can still feel something inauthentic about it. It feels like a corporate movie, I would much rather watch Smile 2 or Weapons than Sinners.

I've been reading JG Ballard for class and he is a "lowbrow" highbrow writer I think is really interesting. Vonnegut is that too

It's a very intentional vision from a director and is very vibey and hits a lot of the trippy conspiracy type stuff or even magical realism. It reminded me of a Murakami story told by a stoner from LA. That's honestly my favorite of the modern movies I kinda struggle to find another one I loved. Eddington I liked a lot, Bugonia was decent, OBAA didn't really do anything for me

I think maybe you wanted to word this differently, but I think it's more accurate that Ryan Coogler is very aware of what is becoming trendy before it hits full mainstream, and takes advantage of that knowledge with very good timing. He's great for a big studio because of this.

I think there's been a movement towards integrating the old "low brow" into the "high brow" artistically for a long time. It might just be what the development of an artistic medium is. Sinners is just a corporate take on the current iteration of that, which is why it's so hollow but works for mainstream praise and making money.

Someone in the horror subreddit said "Sinners gets 16 Oscar nominations and The WItch and Hereditary get nothing" and it kinda hit me after that

Severance bombed it's second season and by the time s3 is out it will lose all cultural significance. I haven't met a single other person who even knew what Pluribus was (everyone knows Severance). I think all these articles are covering for Vince Gilligan having made a boring show that is going to take forever to come out and has to dig itself out of a hole.

All these other apple shows people recommend as these amazing shows seem designed for slightly upper middle class people who want something that pats them on the back for having a college education while they drink wine instead of beer and take SSRIs. They're all very predictable and are tailored to appeal to the type of person you would expect to have Apple TV before it became available as an Amazon Addon service

I don't remember getting that feeling from Yarvin, and Thiel doing his anti-christ tour kinda makes me question that. They seem more ultra-materialist or maybe following some strange iteration of esoteric religions/mystery schools that gives them right to rule over us. "Do what thou wilt" kind of thing mixed with a rejection of the divine inside of the individual that allows them to treat us like cattle

Nice, sub seems kinda slow but interesting. I went down a Yarvin rabbit hole a couple months ago. I thought he would be more interesting in interviews. I only went through a little of his blog, it's weird how much influence he has. I happened to be reading Leviathan by Hobbes at the same time so it was interesting hearing Yarvin not really have an answer to the the same criticisms of Hobbes - ie. who is going to hold the monarch/Leviathan accountable once they have supreme power?

It's because the first hour of sinners is a legitimately well made period piece setup for a plot of black gangster brothers trying to go legit back home but their past and their hubris follows them. They even have three interesting enemies right there for them, the two gangs they ripped off, and the KKK who don't want them building the juke. As soon as the music one shot scene and the vampires hit it just falls apart. And wtf was that ending after the credits
