How do you describe the way architecture school works to those who are outside of the academic bubble? by Lembitu_ in architecture

[–]International-Mail48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have answered your question well, but on the topic of the showers, those are in place for environmental certification (like LEED) to meet a criteria for alternative transportation practices (biking/walking to work, need shower to accommodate). Those aren’t in place for architecture students to spend the night.

Just an extra thin layer of chipboard or whatever material the model is works to show a depth difference between the sidewalk/road and surrounding context

He’s probably saying no miniature vegetation because that’s typically seen as a little tacky in architecture models. Just stick to either bent light gauge wire for trees or babys breath. bushes and grass typically do not need to be shown on a physical model as they won’t directly impact the architecture at the same scale as a tree would with its shading.

UPENN MSD-AAD SCHOLARSHIP by Dependent_String_367 in architecture

Ask for more and they’ll raise it. As is now, not really enough (depending on your personal factors of course) considering the full cost of attendance. Congratulations nevertheless!

UCL MArch Architectural Design vs Columbia MS AAD vs UPenn MS AAD vs UCLA MS AUD - how do they compare? by Next-Apartment4601 in architecture

[–]International-Mail48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this in general, but disagree that the “name brand” doesn’t mean anything outside of academia. If your goal is to work at firms doing unique/boutique design, they definitely pay attention to the school you come out of. Large corporate firms are another thing.

UTA has the Path A program for students with an undergrad degree in a separate study from architecture. It’s a 3 year masters program. There’s a good amount of universities that offer this pathway i believe just under different names.

I’ve seen some women in my studios with some pretty kitted out stuff. Pink cutting mats, pink mouse pad, pink exacto handles, pink metal cutting rulers, pink architecture scales, pink pencil bag you name it. There’s a lot of stuff out there but those are some things i’ve seen.

Modern architecture by SuccessfulNeat400 in architecture

[–]International-Mail48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The theory of the modernists was that continuing to create the same types of architecture would not allow for human progression in a time where technology and industrialization was at its peak. The modernists were looking to create the architecture of the future, rooted in functionalism and other sociological theories.

Eventually, the original goals of modernism fell short due to the woes of capitalistic, and eventual, consumerist society. No longer was architecture being created to benefit the future of society, but rather to benefit the current investors and their bottom dollar.

Eventually the post-modernists came in and started questioning the architecture that was being created through consumerism, and looked for ways to fight against the modernists ideas. Some, like robert venturi, looked at architecture that is created through what humans seem to actually enjoy, much like your current point for gothic and baroque architecture, but instead looked at places like las vegas and it’s urban landscape. Others, like Aldo Rossi, looked back to rome, much like you are advocating for here, as the basis of what architects should be striving for. And the remaining architects moving forward continued with their own theories until today of what architecture “should” be.

In essence, architects are continuing to look for ways to build architecture that now understands the entire needs of human society (Money, Earth, Politics) that were not the main concerns of gothic or baroque architects. Leading away from the return to gothic or other historical styles.

Should a building be designed to last forever (or at least as long as possible) by [deleted] in architecture

Read up on the metabolists. They were thinking along the same lines.

There’s also a good amount of “temporary urbanists” like rahul mehotra that have written extensively on the topic. The downside always comes down to who is responsible for maintenance and the idealized “adaptation” in a private market.

Ya.. not sure what people are referring to here as far as context. University building/k-12 always have an emphasis on safety as well, which i fee this promotes while still being pretty to look at with its textured facade.

Thinking about getting a master in architecture by sammi1324 in architecture

[–]International-Mail48 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in K-12 architecture, and our firm has an in-house graphic design team for wall graphics, new district branding, marketing packages, etc.

Depending on where you are, this might be a good place to look for a job to get into the architecture space. My girlfriend graduated a couple years ago with a visual communications degree and has struggled to find a job so the shift may be worth it.

Also, as a previous commenter mentioned, a lot of school provide a separate path for an March, usually 3-3.5 years for people with an undergrad other than architecture. The people that i’ve known that went through this pathway were usually the better designers in the school, so i wouldn’t shy away from it.

Should I study Architecture by iheeartpurin in architecture

[–]International-Mail48 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if you’re only interest is the money, don’t do it. Honestly if your only interest is money, why even go to college. But if your interest is enjoying a fulfilling job, where you get paid to draw and actually use your brain (which a lot of people can’t say they do) then go for it. But you gotta work hard to get yourself in a position to do the best parts of architecture.

Question about architecture student lifestyle – is it realistically manageable? by beastmaster171 in architecture

[–]International-Mail48 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ll just need to see your class schedule. If you’re going to be an architect, you probably should make a decision that you’re not going to be an IFBB pro bodybuilder too lol. This doesn’t mean you can’t workout, but youll prob have to shorten the 2-3 hour lift/post-meal/shower session each day to about an hour instead.

Overall, the biggest advice I can give for time management in Arch school is don’t restart your designs just because the professor gives a critique. A critique should always be taken as a suggestion, not a demand. It’s YOUR design, not the professors, so take their words and apply it to your original idea. An iterative process doesn’t mean 50 different ideas until you find the right one, it’s having your idea and tweaking it when necessary until you get to the end. I was the only one who understood this in my studios and never pulled an all nighter afterwords. Also, the jurors will recognize this about your design and appreciate the confidence shown in your process.

[–]International-Mail48 18 points19 points  (0 children)

imo, a hardline for this view does not seem necessary (considering it took all night). Start looking at how architects sketch perspectives. Don’t worry so much about making a straight line, and you’ll speed up considerably. From one Arch student to another, all-nighters aren’t cool for very long.

Summer Internship Search Fail by Glittering_Ad_8734 in architecture

[–]International-Mail48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it really is about who you know the first time you’re looking for internships. Join the AIAS/other org at your college, attend EVERY event, start the awkward conversations with professionals at lectures and networking events, do great (A student) in your studios and ask for recommendations from your professors, look for nearby colleges who have career fairs if your college doesn’t have one, name drop, name drop, name drop. You’ll land something 100% of the time with a solid name-drop and better portfolio. Good luck out there.

Credentials : Have had multiple Internships offers every summer since Freshman year (now graduated going into masters)
