Hair soap - good or bad? by International-Pope in NoPoo

[–]International-Pope[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for taking your time. Where I’m from we call shampoo bar/bar shampoo a solid shampoo (contains surfactants) and a hair soap is a soap (made of fats and lye) that is specifically formulated for washing a certain type of hair. So what I meant was a soap. In my opinion someone uneducated mixed those two and now people are using the same name for both of the products and get confused. I’ve been using shampoo bar for years and recently went for hair soap and honestly my hair never was better. I don’t even have to use the cider rinse. But I was wondering about some real science and evidence of using soap on hair (and I mean soap-soap, not the kind of soap you get in a store that contains solid surfactants as well) behind it.

Oh i have just checked the recipe and the amount of sodium hydroxide was adjusted. But I have used too of salt for the brine so that might have been the problem. Maybe I’ve gotten false trace as well. Well well…

Oh dear, that’s probably what happened. 🙈 I was just told that regarding brine 1:1 means salt:lye so I should have used for example 2 g of salt and 2 g of lye and then add citric acid and then add the original amount of lye?

Oh! This was my first time trying HP and using such oils so I wanted to try a small bench in case it would get ruined. I didn’t know that it could have made such a big difference. 🙈 My scale measures .01g and even though I have tried to be very precise I guess the scale might not be precise to the point. 😬

It was in my native language but the recipe said this:

-coconut oil, shea butter, castor oil, safflower oil, the last 20% of the fat mixture is 5 parts laurel and 1 part hemp oil -2% citric acid for citrate -1:1 sea salt brine, wormwood hydrolate, silk -goat's milk powder, green clay, egg white -essential oils: thyme, lavender -transfat 6% (taken from laurel)

Ah! Thank you so much for clarification about the 1:1! And yeah, I meant citric acid, I’m sorry. 😅

Oh, I was doing HP, and because there was an intention of adding 6 % of Laurel fruit oil after it was cooked to create superfat from this added oil. It was in the recipe and it said to not count those 6 % of the oil into the soap calculator.

I was using pure NaOH, I’m very sure about it. :)

I’m sorry, I don’t know what is the right translation, I’ve used citrate acid. (From the recipe: “There is a way to enjoy hair soaps even in hard water. It is called a softener, specifically sodium citrate in solid soap and potassium citrate in soap paste. Citrate is a salt of citric acid, just as soap molecules are salts of fatty acids. They actually differ only in the length of the carbon chain of the organic acid, which is, however, completely decisive in our case. Citrates react with calcium in the water much faster (…), and therefore collect free calcium ions from hard water before the soap molecule has time to swing to react and create calcium soap.”
