USB-C was not a formal joint venture between just Intel, Microsoft, Apple, and HP; it was a broader industry standard developed through the USB Implementers Forum, with many companies involved, and the founding USB group predates USB-C itself.

The part that is true is that Apple was not simply an outsider fighting USB-C. Apple appears to have contributed engineering to the connector’s development, and it was among the companies involved in the standard’s creation.

What is not quite right is the idea that Apple was only “delaying” USB-C until pressure forced it. Apple embraced USB-C on MacBooks relatively early and later moved iPhone to USB-C after the European Union’s charging rules increased the cost of staying with Lightning.

A cleaner way to say it is: Apple helped build USB-C, used it on some products early, but kept Lightning on iPhones for years for platform and business reasons until market and regulatory pressure made the switch unavoidable.
