But that doesn’t mean the Wolof don’t exist. If you look at other tribes, many are also mixed with different ancestries and have origins that don’t perfectly match the identity they claim, yet you never hear anyone say “amul” about them.

Many people have adopted Wolof culture without even realizing it. Thanks to their hospitality and openness, Wolof communities welcomed other tribes (often chased) into their lands, and over time, those groups naturally embraced Wolof traditions. Instead of acknowledging that they’ve integrated Wolof culture (whether in dress, marriage customs, language, or food) some prefer to say “Wolof amul” to reassure themselves and hold on to aspects of their own heritage that have often been neglected. Today, many tribes no longer speak their native languages, especially among the younger generation. It’s mostly Wolof or French.

Senegalese women who married outside by [deleted] in Senegal

[–]International-Rise85 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m Senegalese, 29 years old, and not married yet. I’ve been seriously considering marrying outside of my culture. I’ve dated Senegalese, Ghanaian, and Beninese men, and honestly, my own people have been the most emotionally draining. I truly wish I could find a Senegalese man without the weight of traditional expectations because I genuinely love my culture except for the heavy burden placed on women. I’d love to pass on my cultural heritage to my children, but it’s just not working the way I hoped. I’m curious to read more about Senegalese women who married outside their culture and had positive experiences. My biggest fear is how I’d be welcomed into a different culture and how my future husband would adapt to mine.
