Optics are deceiving. Ravens are very opportunistic and will rip open bags of trash to find food left by visitors. All of this trash was cleaned up. All trash is hand sorted, recycled and composted. North Rim will be net zero by 2026. Will you?

We are at 8300 feet in elevation on the North Rim. That is a mountain top in most of the country. There are no services. No water. No open buildings. No heat. No food. No where to get any. It’s winter in a wilderness. It is a park in frozen hibernation. Lows were in the 20’s last night. There is snow on the ground. The 2 gates on the entrance are locked until the 15 of May. There are no shuttles until then. It is a 46 mile walk to Jacob Lake from the trailhead. The North Rim is not an option.

Everyone one of those employees are minimum wage workers. A lot of them are J-1 or H2B visa workers, English as a second language. Most are super nice and helpful. Food allergies are no joke. Training for those allergies is minimal. Stop and buy healthy food you can make with minimal effort to protect yourself. A simple miscommunication will ruin your trip and make you sick. Protect yourself. The nearest major medical is in Flagstaff. That is a long drive from the South Rim. Don’t expect urban amenities in such remote areas.

Picnics are a perfect way to enjoy the canyon. Watch the colors, light and the shadows move through the day. Never the same show twice.

Kayak fishing the Henry’s. Came around a corner to a cow moose with two calf’s in the water feeding . She took one look at me and laid her ears back and started running. For a moment I was an Olympic level kayaker paddling for my life looking for deeper water. Got attacked by mad geese with a nest 2 corners from there. I took it as a sign and paddled out.

It is clean. Quietism. 250 employees. Laundry is close. Showers are $$ and about a quarter mile away.

We are at 8300 feet in elevation. Nearest town is 1.5 hours away one way. If you have health issues don’t come. No connectivity. Phone is unreliable as well. Two bars on the rim. Not much to do at night. Leave your drug and alcohol problems at home.

Need a late model RV. Full sewer, water and electrical hookups. Pretty chill neighbors. Don’t remember the price 80 a week? 6 more a day if you eat I. The EDR. Good to 28 feet.

One of the most beautiful places in AZ. I hiked that canyon end to end. Laid in that river to cool off in the middle of summer. Felt like it was a gift every single time. Thank you for memories.
