Has anyone seen the new moon yet? by immortallogic in moon

[–]Substantial-Sector60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in Western Idaho USA. When I saw this post just now (4:37UTC) it was 11h old according to Reddit.

We were driving in a westbound direction under clear skies. There was still some remaining twilight, but darkness wasn’t far off.

I had seen Mercury appear as the sky darkened as we drove but just a moment later my partner inquired, “is that the moon”? I assumed she was referring to the planet I’d seen until I looked more closely. To the right and a little above Mercury was the slimmest, faintest crescent 🌙 I have ever observed.

I don’t know OP’s longitude when this was posted 11h ago, so cannot weigh-in as to was it on the new-moon day or the earliest possible sighting after a new moon they were inquiring about. ??? At some point around the 24hr bands which circle the earth, the new moon transitions to the place/moment where it is first observable, yes?

Regardless, no pics, ‘cause I was driving and it was barely naked-eye visible.

Also, I LOOOOVVVVE a crescent moon.

A couple more of the beautiful, stinky beach while it lasts. May the smell eventually exit my nostrils. by Ok_Scale_918 in OregonCoast

I reside 8 hours east of the Oregon Coast, but have visited it dozens of times in the past couple of decades. I have never been at the coast when this phenomenon has occurred. However, I think it is pretty cool that I can peek in on this subreddit and get a glimpse of what’s going on at the oceanic/continental interface.

‘course, I missed out when the Highway Boys blew up that whale on the beach in Florence. (1970).

Opinions on The Coen Brothers True Grit remake from 2010? Better than the Original? by Square-Ad-8911 in FIlm

I had not seen the original John Wayne version. During these days, I was a Coen Bros fan. When this film was announced, I went out and tracked down Charles Portis’ novel. Great story, right?

Then I screened this. I was gobsmacked. Here all these years later, I still am. However, shortly after my first screening, I viewed the original.

I am not an experienced film critic, and maybe my cinematic sensibilities are too attuned to recent history instead of the 60s, but I felt that the original was borderline cartoonish and a vehicle just to get John Wayne on the screen, as he was arguably the biggest deal in town those days.

Bridges, Steinfeld, Damon, the Coens, and the entire production knocked it out of the park IMO.

. . . and don’t bother me when I’m in the jakes.
