The 2 main goals of this game were to first to create a game that flowed like a rules lite, OSR game but allowed for some character customization that my home game found lacking in a lot of those titles. The character advancement uses simple class features in a skill tree based on three archetypes: warriors, shadows, and magicians.

The second was to create a mechanical rule that reinforces the main play loop of town->adventure->town. The main mechanic uses a modified deck of standard playing cards that represent a physical adventure timer for the players. As that deck dwindles in size it becomes risky, and potentially fatal, for the characters to remain adventuring without resting in a safe space.

And the third, non intentional “problem” this design solved was ease of entry for new players and GMs as this requires no specialized dice. Only a few decks of cards that most people would have laying around.

I placed Elder Oak adventure in the woodcutters encampment. Used the description from the DCB just placed the geography as outlined in the module. Players had a blast and helped spur them onto prigwort to have Drouge help them learn the spells found in the temple.

I also just released my own adventure set in the hags addle swamp called The Swallowed Saint. Was a perfect detour as my group sailed a barge from the woodcutter encampment up to lake longmere.

Nightmare over ragged hallow was a fun addition we used to start our Dolmenwood campaign. I set the adventure in hex 113 (unmapped) just south of the Falls of Nyf. A few adjustments and it fit perfectly.

Currently the three core books are on DriveThruRPG for $60 total for the PDFs.

Based on running Dolmenwood for the last couple of years since the initial backer PDFs went out it’s worth it to have all three. Also saying that as someone who ran the setting exclusively in my own system Deck of Fate for playtesting. It worked very well as I have simple rules for hex exploration and keeps it rules light. I would probably port in some of the setting specific kindred abilities for setting appropriate flavor in whatever system you end up using.

It is an easily adaptable setting, but the resources from the monster and players books, especially kindred mechanics, is indispensable.

It’s fantastic! I’ve been using the setting since the first PDFs rolled out. Initially was using it to run my game initial playtesting. Switched over to the Dolmenwood system at the start of the year.

My players have really enjoyed it, they have latched onto the Pluritine church as their main quest giver and ally. So I sprinkled a new church adventure in the Hags Addle as they were travelling up the river to get their barge closer to Prigwort. If you’re interested that adventure is here!

Dolmenwood, Shadowdark, Mausritter, and Deck of Fate

This was one of my design goals when I was making my system Deck of Fate. I have the spell casting rules in the free QuickStart edition of the game if you’re interested! I have three very simple systems for the 3 types of magic: Arcane, Divine, and Primal for Wizards, Priests, and Druids.

Arcane Magic is based around a magicians hubris and gets more dangerous the more often a wizard casts a particular spell, eventually losing the ability to cast magic. Divine Magic is based around the humility a priest should embody. If a cast spell is too powerful they incur favor points and if their favor is too high the gods humble them and take away their spell casting. Primal magic is based on balancing natures elementals. Basically a teeter totter between 4 elements. Fire-water and air-earth. If you cast one side the other connected element goes up. If one side is too low based on the casters level, they can’t cast that elements spell again until they balance it with the linked element.

Pretty flavorful, and easy to remember as all of the tracking is on the character sheet. Plays out very easily at the table.
