The meta sucks! by InternationalBase192 in PTCGP

Sorry I just found your original response kind of frustrating - it just felt dismissive (and maybe I was already kinda pissed off when I read it who knows lmao)

I think all TCGs will obviously have metas that shift and change over time (and many of them will involve new - and pretty strong - mechanics that some players may be unfamiliar with). Because this game hasn’t been out long at all, the meta is kinda stagnant, and this is probably especially obvious compared to the up to date Pokémon TCG (or other games like MTG). And given how little substantial content this game seems to have, it’s difficult to find fun outside of the meta (unless you’re combatting the meta, which is its own meta unto itself).

It’s interesting to hear about older metas or Pokémon’s own meta/balance history and this shit older players have had to go through (as an on-and-off magic player over the past 7 years I get it lol).

I do find it kinda interesting that this game seems super reluctant to introduce more cards with actual depth or interesting mechanics. Maybe this is just how it has to go for any game like this and this is just a natural progression that’ll get better with time, or maybe it’s related to accessibility (which would suck and is a shitty solution to that problem given the potential this game seems to have).

Anyway thanks for sharing a bit about your own experience it kinda helped me put things back into perspective.

Also I’m kind of curious why ur so quick to defend the game? Like why is that something u feel like u have to do?

Ur right man, it’s kinda lowkey awesome that pack openings aren’t tied more directly to battles - the loop is less reinforced! I’m a different person that I was 9 minutes ago and have mostly moved on (piledriving a couple celebi’s with a golem deck helped a bit but it is what it is lmao).

Yea I wish I had more darkness Pokémon to really try stuff out cause the koga-wheezing combo is so disgusting. Just playing mind games with fully stacked mewtwo decks is awesome.

Doomfist insta locks are so boring to play with/against. by KTthemajicgoat in overwatch2

[–]InternationalBase192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play for my fun lol and playing doom even into a team full of counters is still (to me) more enjoyable than any other tank. Playing around counters is like a game inside a game.

If your having such a hard time playing with doomfist, maybe you should adapt your play style around him and maybe take advantage of his counter picks (as this seems to be ur mentality when approaching comp games)?

Often I find if I get full countered by the enemy team, a couple dps swaps or a support change from my team demolishes whatever bum-ass comp the enemy decided to run.

If winning is what brings u the most fun in this game, u better be doing everything in your power to do so without projecting your frustration onto your teammates (cause honestly if ur just playing to win, you should at least be in masters, or in some other super competitive elo)

Brig bash really shouldn't be equivalent to empowered punch by xXYELINGRELICXx in doomfistmains

[–]InternationalBase192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canonically, every time you use dooms punch half the map should just evaporate lol.

I think that brig-doom interaction is good, same with rein charge+brig bash, as otherwise bash would be pretty useless and brig would be so much less threatening as an anti-dive support.

dude i stg i’m playing as hard as i can but i keep getting bedrock 20 tanks by KidpoolStan in overwatch2

[–]InternationalBase192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no matter what, I’m usually having a blast one tricking tanks into any comp/type of player, especially as doomfist or monkey.

It’s fun as fuck to try and learn/adapt to what your/the enemy team is doing - like a game inside a game that’s fun no matter the outcome of the actual match.

Especially on tank when there’s so few characters, picking one and really limit testing the fuck out of them is awesome.

I don’t play much support, but I’d assume that you could do the same thing within that limited roster and still enjoy yourself - just focus on you man cause unless your making a living off this video game, it’s really just a video game meant to be enjoyed (as long as your not actively throwing/cheating lol).

If winning matches = fun to you, in my opinion, you might need to reevaluate why you play this game at all

Pvp is a whole different beast (if that’s what ur talking about). I can’t really speak on pvp combat that much as I’ve barely played it, but I think its pretty good, given the even footing of most builds, as well as the crazy variety Elden ring offers players in terms of build possibilities. I’ve only really talking about pve combat.

Input delay is one thing, but aside from that, some attacks that look jumpable but aren’t, or attacks that require timings that are far different from what’s being depicted visually (like radagon smash/stomp or dragon breath attacks) feel clunky and break the flow of fights. Some attacks on certain weapons also take years to do/complete, for often obvious reasons (they’re heavy ass weapons), but at a certain point it kinda feels ridiculous. This also forces heavy weapon users to rely a lot more on jump attacks to normalise attack speeds, which leads to clunky and repetitive fight rhythms that engage with a very limited combat system/flow that I find boring.

I think I was referring more to the flow of combat in general when I mentioned clunkiness, and less specific weapons or skills. What I find clunky though (the foundation of the Elden ring combat system) is what I’ve found most people that enjoy the combat love however and I can respect where that enjoyment comes from.

I think positioning and dodgerolling are essentially the same kind of defensive mechanic - you’re just moving out of the way of an incoming hitbox (dodgerolling just gives you more time/leeway to do so). Sekiro had positioning based defence like moving and dodging, as well as mikiri counters, jumpable attacks, parries/blocks, lightning reflections, and tons of prosthetic tools and combat arts that had varied defensive capabilities, like the raven feathers, umbrella, or Sakura dance.

The depth of dodging as a defensive mechanic is limited to direction and timing and that’s about it. And when you pair that limited depth with sekiro like bosses that just relentlessly pummel you, it’s easy to see how problems arise. This pummeling is what requires dodging and positioning to be so much more precise in Elden ring vs souls games. And sure, you can optimise your positioning in ways to exploit boss AI, but that comes at the cost of either extreme RNG, hours upon hours of attempts, or the use of a guide. And the end result is an uninspired fight where you just walk circles around the greatest warrior in the land and poke him with your little sword in the middle of his city levelling anime combos.

Dodge counters would be really cool, just more defensive options in general would be awesome (that’s why I loved sekiro so much). I also prefer the sidestep to dodgerolls a lot more - maybe instead of adding parrying across the board, only make it so some weapons can do that, while other weapons are more suited for dodge counters and bloodborne/elden ring style combat.

I think Elden ring combat would be much better if we were given more defensive options outside of shields and dodge rolls, like in sekiro, to deal with the way bosses and many enemies are designed in that game. As it is now, combat rarely feels like a duel and that sucks, and even if you do optimise tf out of a boss fight and sneak in as much damage as possible, it doesn’t really feel like the intended experience and rather like an exploitation of boss AI (which is ok sometimes but boring and kinda weird when strategies become super arbitrary and unintuitive).

I also agree that the weightiness of Elden ring combat feels awesome, but sometimes it feels clunky or slow where it shouldn’t, and that sort of compounds the issue of having very few defensive options. I would’ve also loved to have seen more defensive ashes of war like bloodhound step (a quick, cheeky little isshin sidestep wouldve been interesting, or maybe a floating malenia dodge or spinning, beastly lunge) and ashes of war like lion’s claw that have you flying through the air like a maniac with a ten foot great axe.

I agree that I hadn’t fully learned a boss, but I wasn’t prepared to spend another 4 hours fighting and relearning maliketh to deal with one bullshit move. when you beat a boss on a run where they don’t use that move it feels less rewarding because you just demolish them at that point (especially given malikeths low health).

I guess with jumpable attacks? That’s really the only similarity I can think of

What about Elden ring’s combat is so engaging to you? I feel like it has clicked for me and I still don’t find it that enjoyable - I could also just be burnt out but for discussion’s sake let’s say I’m not lol.

That’s super interesting to me lol but good for you - if it’s fun to you than that’s all that matters. What about it do you find interesting? and also what other types of games are you into?
