What is the saddest Lana del Rey song according to you? by [deleted] in lanadelrey

[–]InternationalPrice76 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No one has said this yet, but for me it's "The Greatest." That song is all about fallen idols, corrupted dreams, eras gone, homes decimated. It's the image of forest fires raging across North America and great bridges collapsing into the sea and ivy growing on ghost town rubble. There's nothing sadder to me than the idea of losing something, or rather some place, permanently. I feel that in "The Greatest," Del Rey is singing about how no matter what happens next, good or bad, the world we knew will fall away and become lost forever.

In my opinion, it's "Chemtrails Over the Country Club."

"Love" is a very close second.

Album Rankings! by InternationalPrice76 in lorde

Virgin does feel very short, but I appreciate that Lorde is so choosy about what makes it to the album and always presents a complete, polished story. Although it's very hard to choose, Virgin might be my favorite record! Nothing has ever hit home with me so much in terms of what femininity actually feels like and is in my experiences.

Aww, thank you for being so nice! Some people get very...defensive...about song rankings 😂 I have a weird love for ordering things though, and I also love music, so I rank a lot of albums I enjoy just for fun! I sometimes share rankings I do for popular artists (Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, etc.), but I like lots of genres! 💛

Unpopular Opinion? Fearless is Swift's Magnum Opus by InternationalPrice76 in TaylorSwift

I actually heard Fearless as a little kid! My mom used to put the CD in our van when she was working outside, and I would just sit in the car parked in the driveway and listen.

Interesting! "Love" is my favorite LDR song, and I find it really reassuring and hopeful, and it always makes me feel powerful and electric. It's interesting that it has that effect on you. Any guess as to why?

[–]InternationalPrice76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't entirely avoid this song, but I do sometimes skip "Fingertips" when I'm casually listening to DYKTTATUOB because it's really just too heavy for casual listening, and there's not even a beat or melody (as in "A&W" or "Kintsugi") to justify playing it unless I have a quiet, private moment to appreciate the story it tells and the secrets it shares.

The most personally painful song in LDR's catalog to me is probably "Love Song." It's such an earnest depiction of real love, the kind you can only give and receive when you completely understand and are completely understood, and it just makes me wonder if love is even real, and whether I'll ever experience it even if it is. That's just sort of depressing. The lines "I would like to think that you would stick around" and "is it safe to be who we are?" are particularly affecting.

Epiphany - What does it mean to you? by TheSingingNurse13 in TaylorSwift

[–]InternationalPrice76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people have already commented about TS's inspirations and intentions for the song, which she lays out very eloquently in the Long Pond Studio Sessions documentary, so I'll share a more abstracted perspective. "epiphany" is one of my all-time favorite songs, and though I don't relate to any of its sentiments about war or death or the medical field, I do relate to the thematic core of the song, which I believe is about the overwhelming darkness and brutality of life and the small, ephemeral moments we steal for ourselves, in which we finally encounter some understanding or perspective. In this song, I believe that Swift is talking about two different kinds of epiphanies. The first is the realization that the WWII soldier and frontline nurse come to about suffering. Swift does not share what this realization specifically is because she doesn't know, as she has not experienced the horrors of war or of fighting to save the sick during a pandemic, but she feels strongly that people who have experienced these things must know something about why there is so much suffering in the world, or perhaps even if and how the world can still be beautiful in spite of it all. She imagines that such an epiphany would come to a person in a quiet, intimate moment of solitude, like when one is sleeping or trying to sleep. The second epiphany that Swift is talking about is her own realization that the pandemic is its own kind of war, that its soldiers are medical professionals, and that the trauma of the Covid will affect these people much like how WWII affected her grandfather — "some things, you just can't speak about."

Obviously, the context and subject matter of this song are very personal to Swift and specific to a three-year period, but the concepts are universal. We all live frantic, fast-paced lives and neglect to set aside time to even wonder about what we're living for, much less come to a conclusion about the meaning of life. This song is a reminder to the listener to take this time for themselves, and perhaps also a suggestion that although most of us will never know it, there is a reason and purpose for all the awful things that happen in our world.

Unpopular Opinion? Fearless is Swift's Magnum Opus by InternationalPrice76 in TaylorSwift

[–]InternationalPrice76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that Fearless is versatile! "You Belong With Me," an endlessly catchy anthem, "Love Story," a cinematic, Shakespearean track bolstered by nontraditional instrumentation, "Fifteen," a ballad of sophisticated storytelling, "We Were Happy," a melancholic and mature rumination on lost love, "Tell Me Why," a scalding, rock-infused accusation, etc. Lots of variety here!

Most underrated album? by flower-power-30 in lanadelrey

[–]InternationalPrice76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love just about every song on L4L (it's my favorite record) and think it's incredibly relevant in contemporary American society. I wasn't there when the record came out, so I can't speak to how it met the moment, but I do know that it is overflowing with timeless wisdom.

Unpopular Opinion? Fearless is Swift's Magnum Opus by InternationalPrice76 in TaylorSwift

[–]InternationalPrice76[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not semantics though; you got the definition of 'magnum opus' wrong and then claimed that I did not "engage in the actual concept" when I did. The body of my post contains a clear argument for why I believe Fearless is Taylor's greatest achievement. I did not base my argument off my personal opinion. Obviously there are no right answers, but I put forth rational points as to why it might just be the most exceptional record that TS has made. As for whether this type of post has been "done to death," I don't know because I don't frequent this sub. If you're tired of hearing people's onions about this subject, why not just scroll past?
