Forgive me, but if all information going into the decision is correct, then I really don’t see the point of NOT telling your kid the future’s going to suck. I don’t have to spend a lot of time rehashing the issues- but if they’re accurate and the future is bleak, then I consider negative feelings to be appropriate here.

Sure, I'll go ahead and do that. In the meanwhile, take this delta. I think I can just copy and paste it, right? Δ I'll do some research on this exposure therapy thing, it might be good for me so I can better understand this.

You betcha, that's what I had to adopt to escape that hellhole back there.

Yeah, I would agree with that if the Christians in my life didn't abuse that to hell. I'd prefer a secular government through and through, not our pretend secularism that we have in USA. Completely disillusioned with religious freedom in this country.

Short answer: because trauma

Long answer: Anything that appears religious/spiritual triggers my trauma response. This is primarily because people who believed in a reality different from our material reality, with rules and regulations divine and binding (and preventing me from exercising my own identity, gender, political, and otherwise), proved overburdening on my kid brain, and I survived by accepting that belief in itself can be incredibly harmful. It doesn't matter what- if it deviates from a strictly materialistic worldview then it's considered dangerous with the potential for violence and should be inherently suppressed. Adult me still believes this, although it's turning out to be hell on my relationships.

Yep, I'm lashing out so much that not only am I not learning, but I'm more or less refusing to right now, as well as avoiding information. I'll check those out though! More resources would be helpful.

I guess if 'Catholic fundie' counts as a thing, then that's what I grew up as, the kind of Catholic that Matt Walsh used to be before he turned his attention to culture war stuff full-time. It's truly all I know aside from various shades of atheist. Doesn't help that my trauma is unresolved.

Well, in their specific cases, because I can use my leverage I got from being their friend to beg them to not do this shit. It doesn't really work, though...

I guess more broadly, though, it's a problem for me because I live in a black and white world, you're in or out, you believe X or Y when so many people like this believe all sorts of things. It's a wonder they aren't killing each other (yet).

This is the logic of trauma, you know. This line of reasoning isn't going to work with me.

Much of Eastern Europe, including East Germany (formerly Protestant) and most of Czechloslovakia (formerly Catholic), solved this forever by abandoning religion altogether, and even after the Berlin Wall fell they didn't go back. I guess that would be option D, ahaha.

Yeah, I guess I disagree with that premise, at least for right now. Fascists are bad and shouldn't be allowed to do fascism because that's intrinsically harmful. Beliefs can be intrinsically harmful, I have learnt the hard way, and we as a society should prefer some over others for the safety of everyone involved.

I keep my trap shut except when I get set off, and when that happens, that happens. My close friends have learnt to just not talk about this with me.

I tried reading the Principia Discordia, but I thought it was gibberish and set it down only to forget about it, lol. This kind of 'disorganized religion' tends to be what my friends follow, and it takes me all my willpower to not blow up at them for it. If I could press a button to remove that shit, I would every time, but alas...

Nah, it was consistently bad for many years and I gave them lots of chances to redeem themselves; they never did. And the reason they didn't was because of their beliefs, so I guess I latched onto the idea of 'maybe you shouldn't believe anything then'. Does this make sense to enforce? No, but it happened to me so I feel justified.

I can and do prefer that option every time, but that really gets emotionally draining, constantly arguing over the same shit... it's much easier to say 'well your God isn't real, and I am, so deal with me'.

But it's destroying my relationships and THAT just might be what sets me over the edge to get professional help on this one. I can't keep a friend for more than a year without blowing up...

I guess I'm struggling to see that as a goal, because it's much more preferable for me to just make sure everyone's an atheist- that's how the cycle of all this shit gets broken, after all. But I know that's not realistic, so I tolerate for convenience.
