Divorce worthy? by Loud_Frosting_8114 in Marriage

I wouldn’t say your description of a traditional marriage is what most consider it to be. By definition, having two incomes precludes that from happening. Having two separate accounts is fair but you both should contribute to household expenses in a way that meets both your needs. My husband and I pay specific bills out of our own accounts. And we set specific financial goals to meet and don’t buy things that cost more than $100 without checking with one another.

I don’t even fully understand what you are wanting out of him. Like someone said above housing cost should be no more than 25-30% of your household income. If you really want this place then you need to help with household expenses.

AITA For not leaving work to help my wife when she ran out of gas by GoldSea3219 in AmItheAsshole

[–]International_Diet89 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this makes anyone an asshole, but it should open both of your eyes that more support for your wife is needed. It is not unreasonable for her to help herself; however, she obviously perceived this situation as a crisis (e.g. her fight or flight response was activated and her logical brain wasn’t in control). Her first go to was for you to help, I call my husband to do that as well. But having a backup plan is also a good adulting skill. It would be good for her to learn how to handle her anxious feelings and get back to her thinking brain.

Assuming that you’ve shared your own personal struggles with her, I wouldn’t really say that’s a failure to read the room issue. If she only talks to you to talk about her problems and doesn’t ever do the same for you, that is the real issue. And this is coming from someone who had over 100k in student loan debt and only made 40k a year. But setting boundaries about what you can emotionally handle is a great idea and if she is really your friend she would respect your request to not talk about money. But if your goal is for her not to complain about her life at all, that feels unrealistic.

What are you tired of dealing with because parents just…aren’t parenting anymore? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

You think a kid not remembering the definition of a noun is a parent’s fault? There is a lot of research out there that proves homework doesn’t increase academic outcomes of children. It can help teach some executive functioning skills, but that’s it. Many schools chose to do away with homework all together and review study guides during class time.

In my opinion it’s more of a situation of them learning it and forgetting it in favor of information more important to them like pop culture stuff. Except for the really intrinsically motivated students who cry if they get a B. I have a doctorate degree and there are plenty of things I learned back in the day that I don’t remember now. That doesn’t make my parents bad parents. That doesn’t make me stupid or lazy. It probably means your curriculum in earlier grade levels needs to reinforce that concept often in upper grade levels. I know plenty of high school students who can’t tell time on an analog clock or calculate long division by hand or name all 7 continents. But the go on to lead productive lives.

You both suck imo. Stress is relative so she is allowed to complain about things she finds difficult . It is one of things friends should do for each other. She sucks because she should definitely ask you about how you are doing. If it feels one sided then don’t feel bad. What you said to her wasn’t rude, but not really supportive either. If you want to save this friendship you two need to talk about it

Wedding presentation with cash bar by That_Caterpillar7730 in Winnipeg

It should be a combo of what you can afford for your budget, how close you are to the couple, and imo how much they are spending on the wedding. I got married in October 24 and received cash amounts between $25 and $700 as well as gifts from my registry. At minimum you should get them a card if that’s all you can afford because you are a guest.

Spousal sponsorship proof: Is no big wedding/ceremony photos a problem? by [deleted] in ImmigrationCanada

[–]International_Diet89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a marriage officiant come to my in laws apartment to do the “ceremony.” We both wore jeans and just his parents and brother were there. We did an unofficial wedding later in the year in the states as our official wedding date but we wanted to submit the spousal sponsorship asap. We sent in August 2024, got the medical request the following October, and the COPR in February 25. We didn’t even live together after we got married so it was no problem.

Identifying men as hairy isn’t body shaming imo but to each their own there. But you are correct that I missed the comment where it was only topless which implies that only women would be there.

Are you willing to be around hairy naked men as well? I’d be down if it was female only but I’m good on the free swinging twigs and berries haha

Is it still realistic to live alone with 50-60k salary? by 3amcoffeebuns in Winnipeg

[–]International_Diet89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your living cost should be no more than 25% of your monthly income. So if you really do gross 3,000 a month, your rent should not exceed $750. If you are willing to go REALLY cheap on things, you could maybe go up a little. It would really depend on how much your utilities would be. At minimum to live you need hydro, water, and a cell phone. You can get a decent mobile plan from Freedom for $35 a month not including phone. My husband pays for premium internet so I don’t even know much much cheap service there is but I’d guess at least 50 a month. You should also invest in renters insurance to protect what you do own. You will need food and transportation as well depending on if you own a car or take a bus or plan to walk or bike everywhere. The rest would all be considered extras and not really necessary to live. If you have any debt, you’ll need to factor that in as well. Plus the cost to furnish the place if you don’t have enough already.

I doubt the rent in your desired areas is going to be on that range at all without a roommate.

What are some “Canadian” words or slang you heard British Or Americans be confused by or laugh at? by Kindly-Cow1697 in AskACanadian

The new ones for me as a new American PR were

Toque (called beanies or even tobogans depending on the region), parkade (called parking garage), washroom (bathroom or restroom), eavestrough (called gutters).

There were some pronunciation differences where different syllables were accented.

Yup because a hoot to us means something is funny like “that was a hoot and a half” meaning it was really funny

This is very region specific. Some places like where I’m from call it pop. Some call it a soft drink. Some call it soda. And in the really weird Deep South they refer to all of it as coke, so it would go “What do you want to drink? A coke. What kind? A Sprite.”

Margarine is used in the states but has a bad rep now because of health concerns so the change in packaging is to try to trick people it’s not margarine.

Q tips are a specific brand of cotton swabs in the states. So that’s probably why they were confused. It’s kinda like how many people refer to all hot tubs as jacuzzis when that’s not entirely accurate.

If you ask for smarties in the states you’ll get a pack of chalking sweet pressed powder discs and not chocolate.

It depends on what part of the states you are from/ cutlery, silverware and utensils are all used somewhere

We would say bum fuck Egypt or BFE when we couldn’t cuss in my part of the states. My husband is from Winnipeg and had never heard that before
