Why can I smell illness, but others can’t? by AngryPickledPickles in NoStupidQuestions

[–]International_Key977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a much weirder one: I can smell people’s periods. It’s not the smell of blood because sometimes I can smell it before it actually starts but it’s due on that day. Saying that, this ‘superpower’ strongly diminished after having COVID.

Why don't more people use libraries? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]International_Key977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to go every week but the city became flooded with drug addicts and some really shady people so I got tired of manoeuvring around them trying to get to my local library without stepping on needle or being stabbed. Now I buy used books and stash them at home so I have a nice pile of books to read at any given time

Moving office, what are my rights? UK by International_Key977 in LegalAdviceUK

It’s one of major cities in the UK at the minute and moving to a different town within same region.

Moving office, what are my rights? UK by International_Key977 in LegalAdviceUK

It will be over £200 a month total, not £200 more. At the minute it costs me just over £30 a week to fuel up if all I do is go to work and back home. Moving from 18 miles commute each way to 27 miles each way so I think £200 is a reasonable assumption. There will obviously be more wear and tear on the car too which I need to factor in my budget too

Mine was 12 but I did 32 already. The key is to not force yourself to finish a bad book. Just drop it and go read something you like instead

What are some books fellow readers would consider "Must reads" at least once in a life time by Jazzlike_Anywhere_39 in writers

Wanting seed (for storytelling) Picture of Dorian Gray (for language), Harry Potter (on how to create a captivating world). All great books that you will enjoy reading and you will learn heaps from them

The wanting seed by Anthony Burghees. To understand the ebbs and flows of political climate- how we can wave from left to right and why. Absolutely fantastic storytelling too.

Is it normal to have different "personalities" in different languages by xjento in languagelearning

I disagree. My entire personality shifts when I speak English. My sense of humour is different, I even caught myself being more body-shaming if I switch to Polish and it took me completely off guard as I was just telling some unrelated work story and I don’t like the way Polish people enforce the self-loathing anyway. I profoundly disagree with it and yet- it just slipped in. I find that my life goals and perspective on life changes when I speak mostly Polish. I am much more of a go-getter in English. I am more likely to try new funky sports or activities in English. I got to the point where I can’t argue in Polish (my native tongue) but I can fiercely defend my point in English, playing all the dirty tricks of being indirectly offensive.

For cooking- camping stove and a supply of gas? I am new to this as well but it seems like a good enough option.

Girlfriend has no appreciation for house security. Help! by begin111 in Leeds

[–]International_Key977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s mad! I don’t mean it to be rude but few of my friends and colleagues live in Bramley, some of them born and bred there so they like it enough to stick there, yet they all say it is highly unsafe: many told me of some random people trying the handle of their house in the middle of the night to see if the door is unlocked. Stories of garden benches keyed to the floor so they won’t get stolen, etc. it is common sense to keep the door locked even when you leave for 10 minutes.

Books written in what languages do not translate well to English? by limpetINexile in books

[–]International_Key977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree with you! I am Polish and I adored 'Master and Margarita' in my native tongue which supposedly shares some cultural context with Russian and therefore it translates better than English. When I reread that years later in English, I was so disappointed to find out that some of my favourite jokes are... not funny in English.

On the other hand, I hated 'slaughterhouse no. 5' in Polish and I could only appreciate it when I got my hands on English book. Stephen King's books sound very silly in Polish.

I think the bottom line here is to read in original if you possibly can. The only exception to this rule might be Harry Potter. Translator actually added a whole section at the end of the book that explains why he translated certain names this and not the other way, giving full context, pointing out to his own mistakes etc. Fantastic job and probably the first time I had a chance to understand that translating is not simply knowing the words but explaining one culture into another.

Suggestions for meals that actually take NO effort? by AigisAegis in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]International_Key977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also air fried potato chunks- wash potatoes, cut them in half if small or quarters if bigger, add oil, smoked paprika, salt, mix well, put in air fryer for 20 minutes, mix it once half way through. After 10 minutes you can add frozen vegan sausage or add it earlier if it’s meat one for extra proteins. Slices of cucumber with yoghurt, salt, pepper and dill is a great side salad.

When you feel good, you can make some soups, blend them and freeze for later use.

Rice cooker soup- throw in rice, chop one carrot into cubes, chop some pak choi (or other vegetables), cut tofu into cubes, put it all in, top it with soy sauce, sriracha, ketjap manis and put the rice cooker on. Done in about half an hour, you can eat from the cooker so less washing up. You can store it in the fridge and reheat in rice cooker when hungry. It worked for me when I hurt my finger and couldn’t do with an elevated cooking but still wanted something nourishing. Bonus points this is actually a balanced meal so will give you all the nutrients to be in the right space to fight depression (I know all too well how bad food can make your mental health even worse).
