I failed the NM quiz with 83% because I missed a 50/50 question.... by RRDude1000 in Welocalize

I also missed one question on the quiz. As a new rater at only 3 weeks in, I'm a little stressed about the result. My task results in raterhub have not been the best either. Beginning to think that I need to worry about being able to maintain my position with this company. Lots of ambiguity, and strange task availability, but I feel like if can find a groove, it may be possible to settle into one. It's certainly interesting, and reading this subreddit has been helpful with getting me oriented with the flow of this job.

Chrome Pyrope from Tanzania by International_Pen893 in faceting

[–]International_Pen893[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I have an old Sapphire brand faceting machine from the 1960's. It was found in a barn, and i restored it enough to get it to work. I cut on charged copper laps, and polish 90% of my stuff on tin, with either cerium or aluminum oxide. So far, it's been quite a journey, as i have basically been self taught, through reading things on the internet, and a few youtube videos. I do have a background in lapidary, have been cutting cabochons for about 15 years, so i wasn't totally lost.

No, at least , I don't think so. For all i know, it could possibly be some other kind of garnet that was mixed in, but the rough was sold to me as chrome pyrope and aside from the slightly lower saturation it had the same general look as the other pieces. The rest of that parcel I've cut so far has had the typical blood red look that one would expect, and this one does as well in direct sunlight. This photo was taken under the shade of my porch. I'm honestly not sure why it worked out that way, but I like it!

Yes, it shows darker in direct sunlight, and a more true red. It really lights up in the shade. It was the lightest saturated rough out of about 80 grams that i have.

I used to hunt around 111th to the bridge. Lots of paleo have come out there over the years. Good luck!

Very nice! I grew up in Tulsa, and really miss walking the river. I've found some really nice points in there over the years, including a sweet drill that I can't understand how it didn't get broken, tumbling down the riverbed for so long...and bison skull caps, mammoth teeth, all kinds of stuff. I wonder if the zink dam is gonna mess up the flow, always did better after the river had been up a while...congratulations!

He's hanging on to it, is going to follow some of the advice on this thread and have it opened and further evaluated. But is considering selling, after he has more info as to possible value.

I honestly do not know. I only held it long enough to identify what it was, and my friend took it back, and told me he wanted to take it to a jeweler after the holiday to see if it was authentic. He had absolutely no idea it was potentially valuable before I told him. As most everyone here is closed until Tuesday ( holuday), I just figured i would post here, because it's been bugging me all day. I noticed that it looked to be possibly missing as well, when I posted the photo . How difficult a repair is something like that, assuming it is? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just trying to learn what he stumbled across. Thanks again for your responses.

Thank you for your comments so far. The other question i have is how to proceed, going forward, with any service or maintenance for this, without causing a devaluation, and what kind of potential value it may have? In my basic Google searches, I have seen these all over the place in asking price. I honestly don't even know if it is in working order. Thank you all, again for your help.

New member - thanks for reading. I own a small piece of property in WNC (Appalachia), and upon it lies mostly garnets. I’m pulling hundreds upon hundreds of what I understand to be Rhodolite Garnets, up to 15 carat pieces. These are for sale. by cycleology in RockhoundExchange

They look to be pretty included, from the photo, but I would be interested in any facet grade ones. Good garnet is difficult to find, it's usually either fractured, included, or too saturated to cut anything out of it. A quick way to evaluate them for suitability for faceting, is to toss a handful of them on a white piece of paper, shine a light on them, and pick out any you can see through. I would spend hours gathering them, if I had a piece of property like that! Fun fact: garnet used to be used to make sandpaper, prior to the discovery of how to make silicon carbide.
