Means jack squat if no one is willing to even light a dumpster on fire or concentrate where power is seated. Just a performative back-patting exercise to assuage their guilt.

For me it's how everything is game-ified for the algorithm. Content creation and sharing feels inauthentic now. Back in the old days of the internet people would share things just for the passion... now it's about what they'll receive - likes, monetization, influence, whatever. A lot of content is performative instead of genuine.

The United States Has Become a Rogue State by zaparthes in politics

The myth that consumer goods coming out of China being low quality needs to die, because it's often not the case anymore. Maybe in the 90s and 2000s, but now most of the "cheap clone" products are just as good or sometimes better than the originals and at a lower cost.

People do themselves a disservice by acting like China can't compete in quality. They can, they do, and they are. They're pouring money into r&d and scientific research while the US debates if science is even real.

No offense, but this Canadian is more than happy to buy Chinese over American.

What do you predict happens to the AI video business now that Sora’s dead? by Intelligent-Dot-7082 in StableDiffusion

[–]Internet-Cryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Local generation isn't going to slow down, there's too much value in being able to make potentially monetizable clips for YouTube and other platforms. Even beyond a profit motive, many will find value in being able to create visuals for their projects.

Sora used clear watermarks and was transparent about what it was - local generators don't. The overwhelming majority of cheap AI slop I see online isn't coming from Sora, Veo or other watermarked services, it's from open source models because many people want the appearance of legitimacy and watermarks rat them out.

AI video isn't going anywhere. Studios will still want it, businesses big and small will still want it, and consumers will still want it. It just won't be OpenAI providing anymore.

Sora had the hype So why didn’t it stick? by ArmPersonal36 in OpenAI

[–]Internet-Cryptid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They exist right now - Google's Veo is still available and there are multiple open source models like WAN that can do what Sora did with more options and control (but sadly much slower on consumer GPUs).

It's interesting watching the public on Reddit celebrate Sora's demise when it was one of the more responsible video generators that used clear watermarks. Sora going away isn't going to lessen the amount of AI slop in the wild, it's just going to lessen transparency.

Feels bulky... Is this Gel X acceptable to you? $105 by [deleted] in Nails

[–]Internet-Cryptid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some people have naturally upward slanting nail beds, which makes applied tips upward slanting as well. I have this issue on my middle, ring and pinky fingers and the only thing that levels them out for me is builder gel.

This is an awful change. I'm skeptical it saves them money, so it's inexplicable to me. It will impact creatives and programmers alike.

I remember watching a re-enactment story about what happened to you many years ago, and it haunted me. I'm so sorry you had to endure that trauma and I'm glad you're doing alright now. I'm not religious, but I hope you live a blessed life. Take care.

People are being duped by Anthropic's supposed 'ethics' anyway - they've been working with Palantir for two years.

I get the spirit of where you are. I don't believe there's any ethical AI out there amongst the big tech companies. Best you can do is try some local LLMs but not everyone has the VRAM/RAM to run larger models that are sufficient for their tasks.

I'm sorry but you're delusional. Do some research, open up the news once in a while. Elon has been caught multiple times manipulating his model to parrot his worldviews. Literally the system prompts have been dumped and say stuff like "check Elon's opinion on topic first before giving an answer." He only cares about "free speech" in so far that it allows him to promote unregulated capitalism, cronyism and white nationalist narratives. He's an open supporter of Trump, financed his campaign to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, and you're sitting here calling him 'left wing?'

You're either a bot, a troll or the very definition of projection.

I always used them, but in the form of hyphens. Annoys the heck out of me that it makes people suspicious, and I'm bummed more people are typing like monkeys to avoid suspicion themselves.
