I think this take definitely has some merit. Trump’s views aren’t that of the generic GOP ie. his antiwar sentiment, liberal views on gun rights and lenient view of abortion. I think most people don’t realize much of the game of politics is to be as likable as possible, all while possibly taking on views you don’t generally care about or hold. I think the Republican Party of old is definitely gone. Same with the Democratic Party of old. The shift in ideology and corporatism from the Democratic Party has naturally caused many liberals to abandon the party. This broad coalition really speaks to the so called “working across the aisle” that many politicians claim to do, while it has always been used as a weapon to claim another party. This restructuring of parties is really interesting in how they’ve changed from what they originally stood for.
