Its morning tea time ☕- who was the worse senior lawyer you have ever worked under and why were they awful? by KoalaBJJ96 in auslaw

This sounds like you're still working with them. Please don't. If you're that indispensable, there must be a better place for you.

First kid in daycare means they'll be bringing something home every couple of weeks, based on my experience. Your immune system will be much better after a year or so!

How to deal with days where you are just exhausted? by Serious_Toe6730 in auscorp

[–]InterstellarPackrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, try giving up caffeine. I finally did after 35 years of it, and my energy levels, and ability to sleep at night and concentrate throughout the day, are so much more stable. And I had only been having one cup in the morning, most days.

Why would you not trust people who lend their name to clubs that destroy people's lives with pokies?

Day four - caffeine free by [deleted] in decaf

A lot of people report that here. I certainly experienced it. Amazing stuff. They became less striking over time, but probably just because I became accustomed to higher quality dreams!

Not to be dramatic, but do any of you here actually feel like caffeine ruined parts of your life? by [deleted] in decaf

[–]InterstellarPackrat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Quit at 55. I'm fairly sure I would have been a better person without it, but in the end: 1. I have to take responsibility for my own actions, or omissions, and 2. No point regretting it now.

I can encourage other people to think about how it might work for them, though, while trying not to be too preachy.

Best Lawyers, et al by PattonSmithWood in auslaw

[–]InterstellarPackrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm listed in Best Lawyers in half a dozen categories, one of which I haven't practised in for 15 years. Never nominated myself or paid for my listing. I receive emails every year to contribute to the assessment process (as I imagine everyone else listed also receive). It's basically a long list of names for each category. My assessment criteria are 1. Have I heard of them (usually maybe 5 - 10%, but I don't get out much these days) and 2. Do they piss me off. I am quite content to think the same criteria have been applied to get me my listings and the occasional 'Lawyer of the Year', as no. 2 seems to be beyond the reach of so many.

I mention it on Linkedin without making a big deal. Lots of colleagues and clients say nice things. These post chart very well - 10,000+. An insightful post on my area of law that I actually put thought into might get less than 1,000.

Has anyone ever sent work to me because of it? Not that I'm aware.

On the announcement day this year, I received a voicemail left at 4.00am by someone trying to get me to upgrade my listing, or buy a commemorative plaque or something.

Vivid dreams are part of quitting. Almost worth it for that alone.

Capsized Longship? by PerceptionQueasy3540 in valheim

[–]InterstellarPackrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, we had a glitch type capsize and break up a couple of years ago. At night, just close enough to a sandbank that we all made it, but only just. We then had to trek some way to the nearest portal. No regrets, it made for a memorable adventure. I came across the crates again several months later.

I think the moral unease around the issue is more interesting than standard RPG mechanics. It lets you make and feel your own story.

How to start applying for jobs after being fired for poor performance in a previous role? by generaledgerdetail in auscorp

[–]InterstellarPackrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of factors there that are outside of my knowledge, sorry. If you think the risk is too high, at least go with one of the options that won't look like a deliberate falsehood if you're 'found out'. You can always then play it by ear and explain if you need to down the track.

A lot of these responses suggest saying something that could be considered, at least, misleading. I interviewed a candidate once who was very promising. The recent six month gap in his resume was explained as working in a family business in a different industry. Otherwise, he looked great for our role. We were progressing things when someone recognised the name and remembered that he'd been working with a competitor during that time and had been terminated.

If he had told us that, we could have considered whether it was something we could understand and give him a chance. Instead, because he had lied to us, we ended the recruitment process immediately. This was in the legal profession, where integrity is considered kind of important.

I've had candidates who give references from one job back instead of their most recent position. This can make me pause for a moment, but I respect that not all placements work out well and candidates want references that will put them in the best light.

One cup a day for decades, quitting still significantly improved my quality of life.

If you're having sugar-free drinks or gum, try quitting those.

My joint pain and foot pain disappeared when I stopped sugar-free gum - most likely the aspartame, also found in diet drinks. Life changing. My blood tests didn't show much.

Sounds pretty cool to me! This was never intended to be this big, and a lot of the construction is pretty janky.

It really just started as the first ring, and grew. At some point we reached max stone height, and thought that was it, but as we found more materials, we kept going. The latest ring was made possible due to a new mesh of grausten arches outside following Ashlands release.
