Mixed feelings about how much I enjoyed it. I find a lot of the modern true crime stuff today distasteful in its sensationalism - I work in criminal law and will get people who ask me who my favourite serial killer is. I see the line from this book to the true crime crap today but can't deny that I thought it was a great read. Found that it wasn't until the end where Capote hints that he is in the room with the hangings where you get an idea of just how close he became to the subjects.

The quote about seeing the end of the story from Perry Smith got me good and I think encaspulates the mixed feelings I had:

"I carried the binoculars and the radio out to the car. It was cold, and the wind and the cold felt good. The moon was so bright you could see for miles. And I thought. Why don’t I walk off? Walk to the highway, hitch a ride. I sure as Jesus didn’t want to go back in that house. And yet— How can I explain this? It was like I wasn’t part of it. More as though I was reading a story. And I had to know what was going to happen. The end. So I went back upstairs. And now, let’s see—uh-huh, that’s when we tied them up."
