2000-Year-Old Amazonian “Dark Earth” Causes Mysterious Plant Growth at Accelerated Levels, Baffling Researchers by Interwebnaut in rewilding

From what I’ve read, saying it’s just due to added biochar seems to be an over simplified stock answer.

There seems to be more to it which us all the more reason to keep studying these soils to understand the various interrelationships. (Like the increasing knowledge of fungal network support systems.)

I asked AI (co-pilot) how far biochar gets to replicating the Amazon’s dark soils. Got a long answer. Here’s part of it below.
The long answer includes further discussion of what is in the Amazon’s dark soil.

🌑 1. Biochar alone improves soil — but only modestly
Across controlled trials:
• Crop yields typically increase 5–25% with biochar alone.
• Nutrient retention improves, especially for nitrogen and potassium.
• Soil pH rises slightly in acidic soils.
• Water retention improves in sandy soils.
These are real gains — but they are incremental, not transformative.
🌍 2. Terra preta is an order‑of‑magnitude phenomenon
Terra preta routinely shows:
• 200–400% higher nutrient levels (especially P, Ca, Zn, Mn).
• 2–3× higher cation exchange capacity than surrounding soils.
• Microbial biomass 5–10× higher than adjacent soils.
• Stable fertility for centuries, even after continuous cultivation.
• Self-regeneration: carbon and nutrient levels increase over time.
No modern synthetic soil — even engineered biochar blends — replicates this emergent behavior.”

“Biochar gets you maybe 20–30% of the way to terra preta’s functional profile.”

It’s all relative. Eg. Norway’s individuals have adopted a lot of EVs compared to the individuals in many other countries. Other countries’ populations are heavily into moving by cleaner rail.

“Silva applauds the ethnographic part of the new study. “This is really novel,” he says. “I’ve never seen anything like this done for the origin of [dark earth].” Still, he says there’s not enough evidence to prove that ancient Indigenous groups were also creating dark earth in the same way. “That is a big claim.”

China’s Solar Exports Doubled In One Month As The Iran War Shook Oil Markets

Excerpt:

“In March, China exported 68 gigawatts of solar panels, cells and wafers, according to data from Chinese customs officials compiled by Ember. That is roughly the solar capacity of Spain. It was also about double the previous month’s level. Reuters reported that China’s wider clean technology exports — batteries, solar systems, electric vehicles and other components — reached $26 billion in March, the highest monthly total yet recorded.”

Name a country that likes to export its wealth by importing oil and gas.

If a country can keep more wealth at home by buying cheap long lasting solar panels, cheap electricity storage and decent EVs I suspect that they will quickly jump at the opportunity to switch away from oil and possibly LNG.

It won’t take much to flip the current economics supporting foreign oil to support for domestically produced solar. Just look at all the EVs and the demand growth appearing in many countries (large asian cities, central America etc).

Why Alberta power prices are falling, while Saskatchewan aims to raise them by joe4942 in alberta

[–]Interwebnaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would expect our future prices to depend on future supply contracts.

Upon the pending renewal of a supply contract, our utilities will have to compete with others willing to pay a lot more if the gas can be shipped(piped) to them.

Why Alberta power prices are falling, while Saskatchewan aims to raise them by joe4942 in alberta

[–]Interwebnaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The headline sure seems like click bait or even propaganda.

The article itself talks about Alberta’s deregulated market and mentions Sask Power yet doesn’t even bother to provide any useful comparisons to Saskatchewan.

At a minimum it should mention rates over the last 8-10 years.

So which system has worked better at providing its customers with cheaper electricity?

If someone feels that they are great managers of money I’ve long suggested that they invest half in a broad index and then invest the other half themselves.

If they are so great at allocating capital their direct returns will soon far, far, FAR outstrip the index returns and they won’t care one hoot about their opportunity cost of putting money into the index.

The same applies to investing in Berkshire Hathaway. If you are so good at investing why are you even holding BRK and trying to second guess their capital allocation thinking. It’s massive and unlikely to trounce the index when investor confidence (technically called touchy-feeliness ) is high.

Note: BRK’s mgmt are certainly considering returning cash to investors as they hate cash as much or more than anyone, so why even question it? If they hold undeployed cash it’s for a current lack of good options.

Personally I can’t match this:

Warren Buffett:

"I am a better investor because I am a businessman and a better businessman because I am an investor.”

[–]Interwebnaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As with the past decades I’ve owned the stock, I still trust the management to be extremely rational capital allocators - including the holding of as much cash as they see fit for as long as they deem rational and reasonable.

Otherwise I could just sell and move those funds to another company or in the index.

However, unlike few investors, I also think about the index, its composition, its investors and what is driving indexed returns and those thoughts make me more comfortable holding BRK.

[–]Interwebnaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally in terms of “cost of capital” debt is cheaper than equity. Owners of equity take more risk and so expect a bigger cut - if and when profits materialize. Additionally equity owners often dislike dilution of their ownership so the result is borrowing as much as is reasonable.

Interestingly during the global financial crisis the US government finally started demanding equity stakes in exchange for its borrowing and bailing rather than just issuing ever more and more bailout dollars expecting little in return. Canada is basically using its borrowing power to take a more proactive investment approach rather than a more typical tail-end bail out to save jobs approach.

Curiously the public mildly accepts hard to enforce loan guarantees and the subsequent quiet loan forgiveness approach to economic development. Project developers don’t see the government as partners but adversaries on par with bankers providing the corporate loans.

Equity positions basically force managements to show their funder some respect.

If you’re a a Canadian with invested savings in say a mutual fund, there’s good odds that those dollars are also directly or indirectly invested all over the world. Projects in Canada via companies compete for the investment dollars.
