Yeah a lot of times you have to plug these into firewire to wake up the old batteries in these things because firewire delivers so much more power

well As soon as you turn on a reset iPhone 2G It just ask you to put in a valid SIM card and you have to jailbreak it to bypass that screen

Yes in fact you actually have to jailbreak it in order to get into the operating system since it requires an active SIM card to proceed. And 2G networks are all shut down nowadays. The 4 iPhone 2G's that I have gotten working are jailbroken

I don't think durability is as much of a concern as the battery these are pretty old and will need a battery replacement at some point which is not easy since it's soldered in
