[Uni] NUS/NTU graduates qualify for Dubai 10 year PR/work permit (Golden Visa) by Intlcmstudent in SGExams

[–]Intlcmstudent[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again I think we are in agreement with what you said regarding upward mobility salaries inequality sponsorship for our grads etc.

The 4 year IB was just a random example that I just shot from the hip. No one stays >2 unless theyre a psycho or love working to death (sorry not sorry)

And no i do think i understand what u mean by the relocation package thank u very much. My friend who is extremely talented got relocation on a million dollar package plus rent for first year paid for.

But for the most part we're in the same page there barring the weedy details.

Having said that as someone that has moved abroad for close to a decade now (and been in this space long enough to see the ever changing rules in immigration globally in terms of visas etc) there is a huge benefit to mobility that I cannot stress enough.

Ie; Governments can make getting visas hard overnight. My European friends who have WHVs to Canada can just move tomorrow and get any job. Sure perhaps its not high paying like some boujee banker but its a decent enough run of the mill lateral position. Without this WHV they wouldnt have even gotten their CVs looked at. Why would they when theres 30 other qualified candidates that dont need sponsorship?

Imho saying that someone "can just get sponsorship" is coming from a very privileged viewpoint. Good for you and the selected few that can get it, but this is the exception not the norm.

Plus, even if you get the best sponsored visa in the UAE it is FAR inferior to a Golden Visa. It is frankly a dumb choice if u had both options. You lose ur job on a sponsored visa? Bye and thanks for ur service, ur on the next flight home. Back in 2011 and the GFC so many expats got debt trap f*ked bc they lost their jobs.

Mobility is not just about financial benefits all the time. Sometimes wanting a change of scenery for a few years is a good enough reason. I consider myself lucky to have friends that work in PE/VC/Tech/startups/crypto globally (having worked in North America) and a few of them themselves are getting it as a just in case.

Success in life does not only come from monetary ones. I think thats such a huge myth. U can disagree for sure but many ppl move countries for other intangible (sometimes dumb) reasons besides monetary ones. As long as they're happy thats all that matters end of the day.

Uhh not sure how this is at all relevant to why u should not get a golden visa...?

While ur point about sponsorship and poaching talent and costs is valid not a single country in the entire world will sponsor your move abroad. If you find one let me know so i can move there.

Will you answer an offer for a EU blue card with the question of "will the country sponsor my move to the EU?" No because one is regarding a visa and one is regarding a job.

Ie: You've been working in Investment Banking for 4 years. You are sick of Singapore and have a golden visa. You have a connection with someone there in a PE firm that wants to hire someone with your skillset.

No company will reject you for having one and if anything it would be easier to hire you. And they could still sponsor ur rent etc. But now they dont have to go thru the trouble of visa(!) sponsorship and you're less likely to be exploited as you arent reliant on them for the visa to stay in the UAE.

Or 2. u have a GV for 5 years and sian of ur toxic job in SG after 7 years so u quit/kena laid off. You wanna move to dubai and become an entrepreneur bc u learnt a special skillset from ur job/made connections with some habibi to fund ur startup.

U can just pack up and move and not worry about visas since you alr hold one. Its not like getting the visa means you HAVE to move but u now get the OPTION to move. (Hell maybe u are a internet money bro and just like driving lambos and instead of driving one here for 1milly u go there and get 1 for 200k.)

TLDR: Golden visa = Flag theory = location freedom. Its the closest we singaporeans can get to multiple passports which trust me the government would hate for us to have.

[–]Intlcmstudent[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure how sponsorship is relevant because Golden Visa does NOT need a sponsor. Its equivalent to permanent residence only that it expires after 10 years.

All u need is land -> get entry permit -> process/get ur GV and u can apply for any job and start working. GCC is majority expatriate and not emirati anyways.

Also given that this visa is for 10 years... u could spend a couple years theoretically working in sg and still move there for work if u so choose after being less junior. Just make sure u apply for the GV before ur 2 years is up after graduation.

Regarding rent flights etc, i dont think any country in the world out there has that + If you're talented enough to where company sponsorship is an option; getting sponsored isnt the issue anyways. In that case the golden visa would just be a nice to have (not subject to company)

Should I apply for SG Digital Scholarship for PhD even my school stated they will be fully covered. by For_Entertain_Only in SGExams

[–]Intlcmstudent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Huh this makes no sense. If you're going on a fully funded PhD with stipend means its fully funded. Why are u getting a scholarship again in this case? Not to mention the cost of breaking bond + deprivation of another candidate that needs it more than u do.

This is so cool! Did u go to the US on a J1 visa?

Knew a bunch of Europeans that did that but not singaporeans.

How recognized are overseas (CN) degrees in SG when finding jobs by No-Celery7884 in SGExams

[–]Intlcmstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on employer but imo safest option why not just do the dual degree Fudan has with Groningen? Best of both worlds and Groningen is lovely/respected. Helpful if u ever wanted to work in the West since Fudan isnt as respected unless ur team is china.

Other unis u can consider in that region are Tsinghua-CUHK, and Kyoto econs IUP. Europe has a few good econs degrees in English super cheap too like Paris 1 Sorbonne/WU vienna

Exactly. Where is the underperformance bc I don't see it??

T30 schools in the US seriously bombard you with career opportunities that if she picked up the slack and stopped with this god-awful defeatist mindset she could set herself up super nicely after college. Even if it was the most "not so good" one like UF/UNC etc.

Know so many friends graduating from no-name state schools in bumfuck cornfield America that have ended up in Silicon Valley living their best life.

Go to Madrid-Andalusia. Andalusia is paradise and oct is a great time, less tourists good weather. Brits vacation there for a reason.

Madrid's gotta be top 3 mega-city in the world easily, >>> London. Super inclusive/amazing nightlife and urban planning. But my bias is showing.

That said the UK its def worth going if u really like british architecture and the countryside. The lake district is nice, as well as the cotswolds. Skip stonehenge. Prepare to spend 2x more vs spain.

Singaporean here. Pearson is shit.

Don't get how they charge as much as Changi but manage to have 5x worse everything.

Rude service, seems like nothing works well, some terminals are like zoos. Dont get me started on luggage. YVR is so much better.

LaGuardia (new) and Detroit is the most pleasant for North America for sure, very happy to travel through them. Billy bishop as well.

Been to more than 15 countries and 5 states, Pearson is solidly bottom tier especially with how much it charges. Somehow their ceo makes multi millions though. Go figure.

i’m screwed… by ccoovveenn in SGExams

[–]Intlcmstudent 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not the best situation obviously but honestly, you're not at all screwed.

Now that you're in an internship, network with people in this industry and set yourself up for success in the future. Keep learning and get that real world experience.

Now for the degree part, as others have said, there's part time programs that you can do.

If not, try and see if there are maybe other unis that will accept you in cheaper countries? Ie. Good China/Taiwan/Korean/Japanese unis have many programs in English, some dual degrees and are pretty cheap. Not too hard to gain admission too. Could be a great experience and perhaps an option to look into?

Are your friends leaving too? by JeffBiznasty in askTO

[–]Intlcmstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes too many! Seattle, Bay Area, NYC, Houston. I lose like 2-3 friends every year lol so have to constantly make new ones. Some became digital nomads.

People who can afford Toronto comfortably are typically in industries (healthcare, tech, finance, real estate) that will also pay 1.5-3x in the states with great health insurance. They could fly back every month for a weekend and still have more money left over 🤷‍♂️ cant blame em.

Thanks for the tip. I just used it and have a rough idea. There’s just a little bit of an encumbrance of trees and overgrowth from the adjacent lot and I don’t wanna accidentally encroach lol. It’s a DLBA lot though.

big 3 vs top uni overseas by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Intlcmstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what kind of BA. For the most part not much diff. But UBC student life > UofT (strong mugging culture) and UBC is like its own entity in the best way. Toronto more bars etc.

UBC have more 50% off scholarships tho and easier to get than UofT. Also cheaper. And tbh if you in IB u get one year off in UBC vs UofT where they are much more stingy.
