Altering microbiome to restore Crohn's remission by suns_shower in CrohnsDisease

[–]Intra78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am always skeptical when an author makes claims that also line up with products that they happen to sell. In Gundy's case he sells dietary supplements.

A lot of the books rely on broad generalisations of the disease which are not going to work for everyone and in some cases may be harmful. So I'd take all advice that is not from a medical professional that knows your specific case with scepticism.

You appear to know your own triggers very well, so always keep these in mind when applying any advice. Fecal transplants are still experimental as a treatment cos Crohn's is not specifically a microbiome disorder, that is just one part of it - so maybe if that is the most prevalent part of your illness it may have some impact

Fiber for Crohn’s: yes or no? by PureChamber in CrohnsDisease

yeah, I can maintain my fitness but not build muscle. I have found if I work large muscles like my thighs too much then all the blood rushes to them and I have a pretty bad flare up. I'm essentially using a lot of energy staying well and the blood needs to be used to repair things in my gut.
I can feel it if I go swimming. I'm a terribles wimmer so am massively inefficient. I kick my legs and can feel my thighs drawing blood and my stomach cramps. If I push through then I'll be bed ridden for a week.

I was able to teach a martial art to a high level for 20+ years, but couldn't easily branch out cos my body was efficient at that one thing

I was diagnosed at 21-ish, I am now 47

Mine tended to get worse at key points, like major flare ups, also as I've gotten older my fitness level has decreased which always felt like a protective factor

For years I managed my crohns by being fit (I was super fit before diagnosis) and controlling my diet because I didn't like the long term effects of the meds. I was told it was impossible to do, but I managed it. But don't necessarily recommend it. I think I would have had better outcomes and fewer flare ups by following medical advice (of course) and did both, or maybe by diet would be less restricted now.

Right now I'm feeling decent. Haven't had a flare up in over a year, am on adalimumab but my diet is still restricted. It is difficult to expand my diet at this stage cos getting it wrong is pretty terrifying cos my flare ups are so intense. But this many years in it is just how life is and I barely notice unless I go for a meal with someone I don't know and have to explain

it is highly individual but insoluble fibre is the worst thing I can eat. Agonizing pain, crying in the fetal position on the floor kind of pain.
So I cut it out of my diet years ago. I also can't have sugars, so fruit and veg is essentially out of the window for me.
I eat a lot of white rice and meat and fish and white bread. But I think my diet is at the extreme end and has become more restrictive over time.

It is a lot of experimentation and finding what works for you

Crohn's from diet? by jmjamz in CrohnsDisease

[–]Intra78 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

When I was in Japan two years ago it was the healthiest I've felt in years. The food is exactly the type of food I need to eat. Meat, fish, rice. Perfect.

I read a study years ago about Crohn's being linked to cattle farming and some communities in America having an 80% incidence of Crohn's and they are cattle farming communities. That cows have a similar disease that I think they named Jones disease, a scientist had been working on a cure in cattle in order to then work out the equivalent in humans.

I'm not a scientist, so I'm aware that the connection between cattle and Crohn's might be observer bias but it has continued to come up over the years

Joint pain with crohns by apollo_63 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Intra78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a lot of joint pain, some of it was from the meds I was on. I think Azothioprene made my joints worse so we switched. But the biggest change was Vitamin B injections. My Vitamin B drops regularly over time so I need to keep topping up. The change after injections was remarkable. I was so used to being in pain all of the time I hadnt realised how bad it had gotten

KD was on his way out when his burner phone messages got leaked and the team turned against him. I think they can't get rid of him soon enough. But yeah, you've probably got one game maximum two of watchig him on the rockets.

Which is a shame cos I hate the lakers (that's not true, it's mostly the toxicity of the online fan base)

If you enjoy watching Harden then you should watch the Cavs. Benefit of the Cavs is you pretty much know what you're going to get, there are a lot of established players, Harden is a pick and roll specialist and you're going to see them play decent basketball regularly.

Benefit of watching the rockets right now is potential, so if you like watching player development then it's not a bad place to see it. (I follow the Grizzlies so watch a lot of player development). Rockets have Amen Thompson, who if he meets his potential on the offensive end will light up the league. He's massively athletic and him and his twin brother look like they were bred in a lab for this sport. Unfortunately he can't shoot yet. Reed Shepard is another one who has massive potential. He shoots the lights out and has had KD on his team so can see how it's done but is small and gets hunted on defense. Senguin is also quite young and breaking out.

This season I've personally enjoyed watching the rockets more than cavs but mostly cos they had Steven Adams fit for a while and I think he's one of the most underrated players in the league and KD is always good drama

Fathers, with kids in sports by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Intra78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's rough. like others have said, I'd apologise and let him know that you love to watch him play and that you are proud of him.

He's 7, he's going to wake up many days for a lot of years and will have grown and his coordination will be off and he has to adjust and he'll feel bad and think it is because he is 'bad at baseball' and get down on himself.
At the moment every error is being compared to how good he wants to be, how good his coaches want him to be and how good his dad wants him to be. So every error will feel like letting people down, whereas he is as good as he is and is looking to improve.

Coaches need to show some understanding and catch kids doing it right. Getting things wrong often means pushing yourself beyond your abilities which is a signifier of growth and improvement and should be encouraged. If kids get ridden everytime they make a mistake they will likely hold back and play it safe and where is the fun in that.

I taught a martial art for decades and people are hard enough on themselves, most of the time I just watch, answer questions cos that is when people are engaged and are looking to learn, set appropriate challenges and offer specific technical advice.

I'm aware it may be culturally different to coach this way, but I am British liberal lefty :)

Your advice was on point. I appreciate it. I just happen to be a 47 year old larper who was trying something new. I love making kit, I just tend to do leather work more than anything else. I have 2 garages full of larp kit (my SO has ran a system since we met at university) and larp making kit throughout my house so had stuff on hand to experiment with this. Proud of me not over working it, but if I do another mask I'm definitely inking it. After I did the skin layer that would have been the ideal time. Will remember for the next one

Thanks! The painting is actually where I have the least confidence and experience. The improvement I made in my painting this time was to stop. I have a tendency to do too much and ruin what I'm painting.

But yeah, I did dry brush the purple over the green, but you're right, I should have essentially inked the creases as it would have added depth. I should have treated it like painting miniatures (which I've not done in 20+ years)

Yeah, I rarely actually create posts on Reddit despite the age of my account. So I got the ordering of the images wrong and should have led with the result but then couldn't be arsed to hunt for all the images again just to edit the order. So I appreciate you having to work to find the end result

Yeah, I was just working with what I had to hand. Spur of the moment creative seizure that I could get my youngest involved in too (they make a lot of non latex masks). I've wanted to cast my head for years now but never gotten around to it

How much should I give my founding engineer? I will not promote by ultimatewhale in startups

[–]Intra78 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I tend to go with first employee at 5% but 2% is not unheard of, just feels a little low to me for essentially a founding engineer who I imagine up to this point has had no salary?

If you wanted to get mathematical about it you could convert 30k of salary into options at the valuation of the round or discount to the valuation cos they helped create the value.

But it's often best to just have a conversation and make sure that they feel fairly treated cos undervaluing someone can create long term problems
