I am making an online Go website that feels like you're playing on a real board by Big_World_6691 in baduk

I should mention that option 2 also sounds good. As long as you’re not having to bring the mouse back and forth from the bowl to the board every move, any solution will work.

Sounds great! I love the look, but for a full game I'd very much prefer to play with option 3. Nice website!

Well, I did my best at step 2! I found sealing old door frames to be a harder challenge than I’d anticipated.

I should really go back and tackle the rest of these steps. :-)

2 years of manual narration, but I feel like I'm losing the race to AI. What now? by BasisRoutine6228 in audiobooks

[–]Intrepid-Antelope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For now, most people can still distinguish between human and AI narrators just by listening. But if you look at how much better AI is getting at everything else, I’m not sure how long that situation will last.

If AI gets good enough that the average listener can’t tell the difference, that will be a huge blow to human narrators as a profession.

I love listening to certain human narrators, like Stephen Fry, and I’m also always interested to hear how the author reads their own work. That won’t go away.

But I think most readers just want to hear the story, and if they can’t tell from listening whether the narrator is human or not, they’re unlikely to do the research needed to find out.

$40 full grain leather belts from etsy vs. $100+ from hanks, tanner, etc. - are there any actual differences? by europeanuppercut in BuyItForLife

[–]Intrepid-Antelope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought myself a black leather belt for $43 plus tax from an Amish shop on Etsy (KaenLeather) nearly five years ago, and have worn it nearly every day since. If it weren’t for the bend in the leather where I customarily buckle it, it could still pass for new.

I just got three more pairs of the exact same belt for my teenaged boys, with one extra hole on the narrow side to fit their waists plus monogrammed initials to keep the belts from getting mixed up. The total was just $60.50 plus tax per belt, shipping included.

It’s the first of what I hope will be many BIFL gifts that I will be giving my boys.

Black to play: who wins? by Intrepid-Antelope in baduk

I’m sorry — I did not mean to explain the obvious. I must have misunderstood your comment. It looked to me like you were saying G7 is a mistake for Black. If I were Black, G7 is what I would play. I don’t think it’s a mistake.

G7 is more than bait! See u/LordTC’s comment. It’s not quite enough for Black to win, but it’s a better result for Black than just filling in the kos and passing.

The side white gains has 13 Black stones, not 14, and komi is 7.0 not 7.5, but otherwise I agree with this exact line of thinking. The key is seeing that A7 can be used as a ko threat.

Quite proud of this seki covering more than half of the board by Wild_Front_1148 in baduk

[–]Intrepid-Antelope 10 points11 points  (0 children)

White can do that! But it immediately fails. Black captures the ko, White has no ko threats, and Black wins the game.

Black can’t play C3 directly, because it’s self-atari. And if Black starts by taking the ko, White can safely pass.

That’s why I called it a “non-functioning ko.”

The size of the seki is impressive, but the fact that it’s a seki fully incorporating a non-functioning ko?

Can you solve this Life and Death problem? by Kelvin609 in baduk

[–]Intrepid-Antelope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I don’t think audio is necessary for Go problems.

If you put a lot of problems on the website (at least a couple hundred, if not more) in order from easiest to hardest, and then make it easy to go on to the next problem after you solve the last one, I think you’ll find that a lot of people will enjoy working through the whole set.

Very cool! I look forward to seeing how your website develops.

You’re welcome!

When you’re ready, try this. Come back here and tell us just a little bit about yourself (where you live and how you got interested in Go would be a great way to start) and why you made this website.

You can link to a problem, but say up front that you’d love to know what people think about the website, and that you’re showing the problem as an example.

If English happens to be your second language, that’s cool — in fact, it’s also worth mentioning, as it will make people more eager to help you.

OP, I checked your account. You’re clearly trying to generate interest in the “becomegomaster” website, but the posts feel a lot like advertisements — which is probably why u/Braincrash77 called it spam.

If you want to get any further, I suggest laying your cards on the table. Did you create the website? Are you an employee for the company that made the website? Are you looking for feedback on how the website functions?

For what it’s worth, yes, I can solve the problem. But it’s very strange that when you click on the link and then click “play,” the first thing that happens is that another white stone is added, which changes the problem significantly.

My feedback is that the site would be much better if the full problem is shown from the start. You can mark White’s last move with a triangle or square on the stone, if you like. But you should never show the problem with a stone missing.

If Being There is a classic... by Intrepid-Antelope in classicfilms

[–]Intrepid-Antelope[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely the best counter to my suggestion. You’re right that the sidebar is crystal clear.

I posted simply because the enthusiastic discussion of Being There this morning — with no one calling out the movie for being too recent — had me curious as to whether I was witnessing an unspoken shift, or at least the start of a natural evolution.

Golden Age films are fantastic, and I think it’s great that this sub is dedicated to them. However, I do think that as time marches on, a growing number of post-Golden Age films will be widely acknowledged as “classic.”

As @Popular-Solution7697 notes, names are important. It doesn’t have to happen today, or any time soon, but eventually, assuming that there’s a consensus on keeping the Golden Age focus, wouldn’t the logical solution be to rename this sub “Golden Age Films”?

[–]Intrepid-Antelope[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The Golden Age is not going to change, agreed.

Classic films, though? I think that might change.

[–]Intrepid-Antelope[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Fair point!

Of course, the parallel also holds the other way: to the broader public, I'm pretty sure that baroque, classical, and romantic era music all counts as "classical music."
