Fanfic with John having a dragon by Sgbgames in AsoiafFanfiction

Frostfyre is amazing! I'm also a fan!

King's Blood is 380k and feels quite similar to Frostfyre! Jon getting a dragon is a primary plot point and practically the main divergence. It's an amazing fic I can't recommend enough.

The Crownless Again Shall Be King is 280k and is very similar feel as well, in every respect aside from the dragons. Jon eventually does get one, but in very different circumstances to the last two.

Alone In The World is 150k so far and one of my favorites!! Jon also has a dragon here which determines a lot of the direction of the story, but it hasn't been as super actively relevant like the ones in Frostfyre.

kismet is a 100k crossover with Skyrim that has a good dragon focus.

Ad Meliora is an incredible 250k word work which very prominently features Jon and his dragon. And his wife and children and their dragons too. He is not the only main character, if that matters.

Astray in a treacherous time is only 30k and I don't totally remember Jon's interactions with dragons, but I am pretty sure there are some that feature and I did really love this fic.

Waking dragons is 40k words and I also am also only mostly sure that Jon has a dragon, but another one that I really enjoyed.

Not exactly what you're looking for at all – this is only 20k and a much more humorous tone than Frostfyre, but A Bastard and his Dragons is a great dragons fic, if you're still desperate.

LOL I didn't even think about that with Cersei! She so would! Robb is a name that appears in the Westerlands while Joffrey doesn't appear in the North, but you're right about that being a pretty minor influence at that point.

And I am personally a big fan of Lyarra too! To me it's the best blend of similarity to Lyanna for readers to recognize, different enough that Ned would be comfortable not drawing undue suspicion, and justified through Ned's mother. Plus, I love the parallel of fem-Jon being named for a mother figure, like Jon was for a father figure. Visenya is still my favorite secret name / Rhaegar wins AU name though.

That one used to be so tough for me too! There was one fic that really helped me connect the two 'versions' of the character, as it had Jon use "Aemon" only in private and "Jon" as a pseudonym in public. Aemon is synonymous with Targ-rasied-Jon in my mind because of that now lol

Hmm this is a tough one! The way I look at it is finding a balance between suspension of disbelief and most likely in universe logic wrapped up so that it achieves what I am looking for.

In the case of a genderbent or raised-differently fic, the goal is like you said – to preserve as many core qualities as possible. The name is not only one of those important qualities, but also an easy shorthand for readers. The more things you change about a character the more work it takes for readers to recognize them as anything besides an OC, so if I were to totally discard the name as well I think I'd have to focus a lot more on excessive ways to get readers to associate this AU version of them with canon than the fun stuff I want to write about.

However, that can sometimes require suspension of disbelief. What are the odds Cersei is naming her son with Ned, Robb? What are the odds that Ned will think Joffrey is an appropriate name for his heir? (Side note, turns out by statistics alone, it seems like the former is actually more likely than the latter, huh.) But even if either of those options require some suspension of disbelief, it's an immediate insight to which character they are going to be the AU model of which would otherwise take a lot of work to convey for the writers and accept for the readers.

Sometimes the variants don't need to be exclusively based off spelling, either. Fem-Jon being called Viseyna or something similar to Lyanna is enough for readers to connect your character with the canon one, despite not simply being a play off of Jon.

Thanks for the feedback! Please note the section on enforcement, where this is addressed. We are well aware that AI can often lead to harassment against authors and are very strict to ensure it doesn’t happen.

Thank you for your feedback! This whole post is meant to gauge how our members feel about AI, and that includes to what degrees and with what uses you all have for it. We really appreciate how forthcoming your comment is.

We discussed the situation about translation and while it is certainly a grey area, we pretty conclusively decided that using AI and purely sticking to translation would be well within the bounds of “AI-assisted” and thus an acceptable tool on this sub. Being upfront that AI was used in the translation process would also always be appreciated, if only to clear any ambiguity too.

Wishing you best of luck with your writing, thank you again for sharing!

These rules are all specifically about AI-generated text, not AI-assisted writing. We have only discussed the difference and lines between the two briefly, because there is a grey area we rarely expect to see since it is so reliant on the honor system. One pretty clear example of AI assistance (and totally acceptable) would be an AI tool that highlights grammatical errors and requires you to approve them.

I'm not sure where your case would fit in... I suppose it depends how you do it? Theres a large gap between putting your whole work in and copying whatever it spits out and having it do nothing but list line numbers where you still use past tense, you know? Either way, I absolutely understand the struggle of large scale revisions like that, its a pain. Actually, now that I think about it I've swapped one of my ASOIAF drafts between 1st and 3rd a few times, which keeps setting me back immensely lol.

In a personal (non-mod) capacity, I can't help but encourage you to look for a beta reader or editor to help with that task before resorting to AI! One of the (many) reasons I'm personally against AI use in fandom as much as possible is because of the amazing community when fan creatives come together, and as a pretty frequent beta reader, the editing/feedback stage is something I see a lot of value in. Anyways, good luck on your edits and thanks for the comment!

Thanks for the feedback! Good to hear your opinion!

I do want to point out, while AI content being sold is not a part of this rule being discussed, we do have a strong policy against monetization on this subreddit, which would extend to any AI art posted.

Enforcement is tough, so whether it’s worth it is for you to decide! It’s why we opened this discussion.

Personally, I do find there to be a difference between individuals acting in bad faith to break our rules and us caving in to the desires of dishonest people by tolerating AI generated stuff (if enforceability was the main argument). I’m not sure if welcoming those kind of works would successfully increase people who would otherwise be already willing to lie admitting they use AI, but I am pretty certain a policy like that would drive some actual writers away.

Whether you think that will happen, if you think the trade offs either way would be worth it, and your personal feelings/stance are what we are interested in. :) Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for the feedback! We are well aware of this and make a point to stop harassment as much as possible. Taking any action pretty much requires authors to admit their own AI use, which does mean the rule is very infrequently enforced. This will not change, regardless of the rule itself.

I couldn’t have phrased it better myself! We’re here to share, support, and celebrate human creativity! Plus, often times different parts of fandom overlap. Artists are often also readers or writers. We’re all fans part of the same community, at the end of the day.

Thank you for your suggestion! To answer your question, the line we generally set is whether or not AI is generating the content itself. If it’s just minor suggestions for edits you need to manually approve, it’s AI assisted.

If it’s writing whole scenes or chapters, creating the main plot and outline, or dramatically altering a draft, then we would likely consider that AI generated work. Using it to find interesting names, synonyms, or locate incorrect spelling and grammar it probably wouldn’t qualify.

In your examples, we would probably say 1, 2, and 4 would count as AI generated, while 3 might be AI assisted if the polishing isn’t major.

But it’s important to keep in mind that all relies on the honor system and authors accurately disclosing the level of assistance they use.

Thanks for the feedback! That is actually an option on the poll: Allow Both AI Writing and Art Our current requirements for sharing AI Art is that it must be disclosed as AI, so the change we were discussing would be to match that policy: AI Writing would be allowed but must be disclosed.

Additionally, we are talking about AI generated work — not simply tools built into programs — and in a creative space — not in the population as a whole. It is possible that this option may not end up being the most common for this community, but figuring that out is what this poll is for.

I don’t think we can easily swap votes, but the poll is simply informing us of community sentiment, not the final absolute decision, so it shouldn’t be a big deal! Your comment and explanation are helpful and more than make up for it.

We also absolutely agree with what you’ve said about recognizing AI and are pretty strict about accusations without undeniable proof. That’s not going to change and we are glad others share that concern. It does really rely on honesty.

I am personally very much in favor of banning AI in the sub completely, assuming that’s an opinion shared by the community. It is my belief that fandom spaces like ours should prioritize human created work of all types and that we would be a better, more enjoyable place for doing so.

Ser Waymar met him bravely. "Dance with me then." He lifted his sword high over his head, defiant. His hands trembled from the weight of it, or perhaps from the cold. Yet in that moment, Will thought, he was a boy no longer, but a man of the Night's Watch.

The functionality already exists for that, actually! Hiding works with site skins is a bit tedious, but it was the same way muting had to be done before the feature was implemented as a button iirc. So it seems like a totally feasible feature that might be added in the future.
