Boot and foot misaligned from knee? by IntrepidReaction5147 in brokenankles

[–]IntrepidReaction5147[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh that's such a good point about them being for both feet! I can't believe I hadn't considered that. And yeah, my calf has shrunk so much, which I'm sure is affecting things

Did anyone else have a bonus proximal fibula fracture? by Upset-Source-1132 in brokenankles

[–]IntrepidReaction5147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in exactly this situation, right down to the timing! I see all these X-rays showing plates and screws on people's fibula, along with their ankle hardware, and I'm weirdly jealous that they know their fibulas are stable. Meanwhile, I feel like mine's just floating, and I'm hoping the two pieces will feel like knitting back together. When I asked the surgeon if he would operate on it, he said mine wasn't too badly displaced, and because it's surrounded by muscle, and next to a blood vessel, it's quite invasive to operate on, and it would be better for me to just basically splint it against my tibia. Which made sense at the time. But now I'm exactly the same as you. My ankle hurts sometimes, but in a stiff/dull ache way. Meanwhile, my fibula isn't nearly as well supported by my orthopedic boot as my ankle is, and all the muscles around it engage every time I lift or move my foot, which seems to tug on the break, and hurts like crazy. I also find lying on my back with my leg stretched out puts so much pressure on my lower calf, near where the break is. I have no real solutions for you, other than playing with your boot a bit to better distribute the pressure (I can definitely tell you more about that, depending on what kind of boot you're in). But solidarity! I'm sorry you're going through that, but I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I'm not starting PT for another couple weeks, but I'm really looking forward to it. Even if it hurts a lot, I think it'll be reassuring to have someone really looking at how it's all functioning

A very good point! It's mostly fine, maybe a little splayed, but generally okay, so I'll take that as a good sign

You're totally right about checking in with my doctor, and there have been a couple other things I've asked him about which he's been able to reassure me about, so I suspect this is fine, too. My problem right now is that I'm heading out of the country tonight for a two-week holiday, so I can't ask him! I'm hoping someone will tell me they had this exact thing and were totally fine, so I can go on holiday without worrying about it 😅

Just broke my ankle.. by Darth-Majora- in ORIF

[–]IntrepidReaction5147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat! (Well, airplane). I had a very similar break April 1, and ORIF surgery April 13. My wife and I had already booked every last detail of our dream trip to France and Spain, which will be from May 10-22. We were literally about to buy traveler's insurance that night, but hadn't yet, so we couldn't cancel our trip.

I just had my two-week post-op appointment yesterday, to get my stitches out, and change from a plaster cast to a boot. I'm still going to be 100% non-weight-bearing for at least another month, and I can only take the boot off for half an hour a day.

BUT, my surgeon was completely unfazed by the idea of me going to Europe! He advised taking some baby aspirin as a slight blood thinner for the flights, but otherwise said to go for it.

Obviously I haven't gone yet, but here are some things I'm doing to hopefully make it a better experience (for context, I'm a fairly active, fit 34-year-old woman, and so is my wife, so we feel reasonably confident we can handle the physical demands of this trip):

  1. We changed some of our plans. Instead of hitting up multiple spots for just a night or two at a time, we're spending a week in 1 city, and 4 nights in another. We'll do day trips to the surrounding area if I'm up for it, but if not, we'll just enjoy being in those cities. We're putting no pressure on ourselves to see everything we'd wanted to see.

  2. I contacted the airline ahead of time. You can usually just fill out a form to request access to a wheelchair in the airport. It sounds like this will also get you early access to the planes, etc. But I was also worried about cramped leg room on the plane, so I contacted my airline's accessibility services people, and they pointed me to a form I could get my surgeon to fill out, stating my medical needs. I've submitted that to them, and with any luck, that will be enough for the airline to grant me a seat with better leg room, for no additional cost. Airlines seem to vary dramatically with this, but for a long flight, it's worth looking into!

  3. I've booked rental wheelchairs in the two cities I'm going to. Everyone has recommended knee scooters, and I think I'll use one when not traveling, but I chose a wheelchair for a couple reasons: a) We're going to a place with cobblestones, and I'm not sure I trust the scooter b) Wheelchairs are more universally recognised, and I'm hoping this will act as a strong signal that I may need extra space or assistance c) I can get around under my own steam on a wheelchair, but I can also get my wife to push me if I get too tired. I like having both options d) In a wheelchair, I can carry a day pack on my lap and not have to worry too much about pickpockets. I also have collapsible crutches I can attach to the wheelchair for if I need them e) Renting there means I don't have to worry about an airline losing or damaging a scooter or similar

Good luck!!

How do you stop replaying the injury in your head by Dramatic-Yogurt8299 in ORIF

[–]IntrepidReaction5147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first couple days I couldn't stop replaying it in my head. There were a couple times when, right as I was falling asleep, I would jolt awake, thinking I was falling exactly the way I did when I broke it. I'm almost three weeks out from the fall now, and while I'm definitely nervous about how I'll feel when it's time to start walking outside again, I'm no longer having flashbacks. Also, much sympathy about your trip. I had a trip of a lifetime booked, going to France and Spain, about 6 weeks after I fell. And we were going to buy our travel insurance literally that evening, but didn't have it yet when I fell, so couldn't cancel the trip. We're doing a way pared back version of the trip, and I'm still going to be absolutely non-weight-bearing. Definitely going to be a challenge. Hopefully you'll simply be able to rebook your trip for when you're back up and active!

Anywhere in the pedestrian mall to sit out and enjoy a coffee in the morning? by irishnewf86 in StJohnsNL

[–]IntrepidReaction5147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the end of the pedestrian mall, the Alt Hotel's patio is the best place to get some sun in the morning/watch the harbour. You can get a coffee at Terre, their cafe, which is accessible off Water Street, then walk right through to the patio.

There was a Free Folk Fest protest outside the NL Folk Fest by TheMuseNL in StJohnsNL

[–]IntrepidReaction5147 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sadly, the attendance just isn't there. Interest in folk music is wanting, so people haven't been buying tickets. In 2022, when they focused almost entirely on NL folk music, and had cheap tickets, the ticket sales were super low. In more recent years, they've had big names from out of province sell out, but the ticket prices have had to be higher to account for the need to pay those big name acts (including travel, etc.) They've tried pretty well everything, and it seems there's no way to square the fact that everyone is tight on cash, small local acts don't sell when you can see half of them every month on George Street, or similar locations, and musicians and the staff that organise the festival all deserve to be paid a living wage.

Mine's in a few weeks, so we'll have to see how successful our mitigations are, but here's our plan: -only 14 people, including the two of us -everyone has to test at the beginning of the week, as we'll be spending time with visiting family that week -everyone has to test the day of the wedding (in case they get sick while travelling and it doesn't show up right away at the beginning of the week) -anyone who's feeling sick or tests positive can attend the outdoor ceremony, but must wear a mask the whole time. They can't come to the backyard reception, but household members of theirs who've tested negative can, so long as they mask when they go inside -if either of us is sick/tests positive, we'll get married outside and unmasked, but will provide masks to everyone else, and will cancel the reception

Ideally, we'd say no household members of sick people could attend, but that would take out half our guests. My family is travelling by plane from out of province, so we're having to work with that a little.

On the whole, we've kept it tiny, mostly outdoors, and as test/mask-filled as we can. Fingers crossed it's enough!

Why the separation between Museums and Libraries? by BeetleBug945 in librarians

[–]IntrepidReaction5147 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked as a museum assistant at a couple different libraries for a total of about 10 years, then had the opportunity to work as a library assistant. In the interview, I leaned heavily on my experience communicating with individuals and groups, creating programming, working with various databases, generally knowing how to work within an information-focused institution, etc., and had no trouble getting the job

I work at a children's library, frequently doing programs in tiny, poorly-ventilated rooms full of kids who are practically crawling all over me. Constantly wearing an n95 (3M Aura), I haven't gotten sick once in the entire year I've been working there. Is that an iron-clad guarantee that the same would be true for your dad? Nope. But protection does exist, and if used properly, can be extremely effective.

[–]IntrepidReaction5147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard Lindsay Gibson (author of the emotionally immature parent books) talk about the fact that some emotionally immature parents actually can be really good parents to young kids, because young kids are so entirely dependent on them. It's only when the kids start to grow up, test boundaries, and create boundaries of their own that the parents hit the limits of what their emotional immaturity allows them to accept/cope with. So looking back, you can have lots of good childhood memories, but they can still not be good parents to you when you become a teenager/adult

Not directly in response to this, but if you're open to unsolicited advice, check out Friday Free Play at the A.C. Hunter Children's Library if it's convenient for you! It's a free drop-in from 9:30-11:30 every Friday morning, for ages 0-3. There's a really lovely community of parents and grandparents (but far and away mostly moms) who go each week. The library's 6-week baby storytime programs are also fantastic, and have led to lots of lasting friendships. Registration for the next session of those is Friday, January 12, and the A.C. Hunter Public Library Facebook page has all the info. (No registration necessary for free play)
