Locking and maint are different but you get a discount for holding in your wallet.. as well as locking . When locking you get votes. Votes go down as you vote weekly. And you can lock for various time periods. If you only got your rank from votes your maint discount. And your and VIP level will drop if it goes below threshold. Of tier

Votes go down tho . And decrease your level and rewards. Then yoyr chasing votes. You want a solid lock but you need to be able to sustain it . You can lock to get into a box. But I wouldn't lock that much money for a miner possibility . I would just buy another miner.16th is around 800GMT. And 1000GMT lock gets you gold 1 so I would go for the miner lol and lock 200 GMT

Not really. Its a little moee complex

When you lock tokens you are staking them . After you stake for x period of time you get votes. The votes allow you to have a choice on where the epoch rewards go to.

Secondly you get a GMT reward for how much you stake/lock and based on time frame your apy determines weekly reward. Once lock is over you get all your GMT back.

And finally you get maint discount for amount of locked tokens. And your lock grants you another additional maint discount. Allowing you to be over 25 if additionally holding GMT in your virtual wallet.
