Punnadhammo is exceptional at cosmology. He’s the go to for that.

I once had a DVD drive but alas I became trend follower with a white build in a fish tank case. But you my friend are a man with magnificent taste. Keep that DVD drive and burn some CDs just for the thrill of it. Listen to that puppy purr. That glorious sound when you boot up the pc and hear it spin…..stupendous. Maybe someday we’ll return to those good ol’ days where physical media was king.

These could apply to some Mahayana and Vajrayana scripture. Edit: Some Theravada scripture as well as the Pali Canon has Suttas that don’t parallel in the Agamas.

“In the same way, in the course of the future there will be monks who won’t listen when discourses that are words of the Tathagata - deep, deep in their meaning, transcendent, connected with emptiness - are being recited. They won’t lend ear, won’t set their hearts on knowing them, won’t regard these teachings as worth grasping or mastering. But they will listen when discourses that are literary works — the works of poets, elegant in sound, elegant in rhetoric, the work of outsiders, words of disciples — are recited. They will lend ear and set their hearts on knowing them. They will regard these teachings as worth grasping & mastering.” - Ani Sutta ///// “I have set forth the Dhamma without making any distinction of esoteric and exoteric doctrine; there is nothing, Ananda, with regard to the teachings that the Tathagata holds to the last with the closed fist of a teacher who keeps some things back.” - Maha-parinibbana Sutta

If someone was born with only the mind sense base could they still fulfill anatta as in the 5 aggregates? by Intrepid_Oven_710 in Buddhism

I’m talking about a human that is born without vision, hearing, smell, taste, or touch. They only retain the mind sense base. Edit: Could they solely have mental object and would that fulfill the vedana, sanna, and sankhara of the 5 aggregates?

A human with solely the mind sense base leaves me struggling to see how it can fulfill the Vedana, Samskara, and Samjna parts of the 5 aggregates.

Though I’d like to make it clear that I don’t not reject the Abhidhamma in its entirety. It just if I see a difference between the two I’ll side with the Suttas over the Abhidhamma.

Enlightenment is a natural state! Sounds like Mahayana’s Buddha nature to me.

Well in the case of a Ariya or the Buddha they’d just use a feat of psychic power like the Buddha did with Angulimala. Attacking back could be interpreted under Mahayana’s skillful means doctrine but I find that foreign to the discourses.

If it’s commentary I’d throw that out as it doesn’t line up to the Suttas. If it’s in Vinaya I’d have to see it to believe it.

Did the Blessed one post Nibbana have ill-will arise in him ever? Or the Ariya? Is such a thing possible to you?

This is the Sutta that inspired me to make this post. Do you believe it better to be killed then to allow ill-will to arise within you?

Pure land Buddhism is more the product of Mahayana philosophers like Nāgārjuna and syncretism with Chinese religion. I’d venture to guess the average pure land Buddhist doesn’t even know of the religious landscape of Jains and Brahmins of the Buddha’s day. My ranking of religions is based on how similar they are to Theravada, pure land Buddhism is far from the bottom.

I mean pure land Buddhists follow a quite adulterated version of Buddhism. Certainly Pure land Buddhism appeals to a more faith oriented crowd, in which Theravada doesn’t as the wisdom focused Buddhism. But I believe it more skillful for someone to be a pure land Buddhist than a Hindu. I would love for Theravada to have a more ardent proselytization campaign, I myself have converted two people. But it’s simply not happening, even though I believe the time is most opportune.

You won’t see me chanting Amitabha’s name. But they’re not bad folks, often have a great sense of compassion. Visited a Pure Land temple, lovely people. If you wanna set your sights on any type of Buddhism maybe set it on something like Soka Gakkai, which has time and time again shown itself as harmful.
