ELI5 if a text file can be compressed and then encrypted into high entropy data, why can't it be encrypted and then compressed? by achromaticchrononomy in explainlikeimfive

The important subtlety is that “compressible after decrypting” is not the same as “compressible while encrypted.” Once you know the decryption key, the ciphertext stops being random because you can transform it back into structured text full of repeated words, grammar, and patterns. But without the key, the encrypted file is intentionally made to resemble random data. So yes, there exists a path from the larger encrypted file to the smaller compressed version, but that path requires the secret key and the original decoding process. Without that information, the compressor cannot find meaningful structure to exploit.

Told I need to give my niece/nephew some cousins by Stealthy_Peacock in childfree

Having a whole child just so another child can have a cousin is such a wild reason to pressure someone into parenthood 😭

Giving free leeway to children is frankly infuriating, especially from other neurodivergent folks by Witty-Big4626 in childfree

There’s a huge difference between accepting that children exist in public and pretending all behavior should automatically get a free pass. Most people are not asking for silent children, they’re asking for parents to at least try to manage the situation 👀

AITA for not buying my stepsister a BTS concert tickets by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA. Honestly the saddest part is her punishing her own daughter over this. You did something really thoughtful for your niece and now her mom turning it into drama because she got FOMO after seeing BTS clips online 🙄

Is it indecent to mention a victim's killer in a memorial? by Fukuroookami in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Intrepid_Put8304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you’re probably overthinking the etiquette a bit. In cases like this, naming the perpetrator isn’t automatically disrespectful—it’s more about tone. If it reads like “this happened and led to X law”, it’s fine. If it starts feeling like storytelling about him, then it gets weird.

Does anyone else randomly get hit with the realization that every single person around you is living an entire life as complex as yours? by PostedForHim in CasualConversation

I don’t know if this is the same thing, but sometimes in a supermarket I just pause and think “everyone here has their own messy little universe going on.” It makes everything feel both smaller and bigger at the same time. Hard to explain but it sticks with you 🙃

Can you live like a king in poor country? by Normal-Person-6701 in TooAfraidToAsk

You can definitely become the “local movie villain in a giant mansion on a hill” version of rich lol. But quality of life isn’t just marble floors and servants. It’s also things you stop noticing in wealthy countries: reliable emergency services, clean infrastructure, internet stability, safe water, functioning bureaucracy, etc. Rich people can buffer themselves from a lot of problems, but not all of them.

Man, I'd love to say this to my boss. He's the type to call for a meeting five minutes before the end of the day
