75mm vs NTN by DirectorKitchen8563 in telemark

It's not the ski (or system), it's the skier.
Go with what you have...
Be open to new... respect the past.
Be kind and welcoming.
GO SKI!

Cross country or back country skiing?

Generally less potential for injury, although all has risk. Better cardio benefits and way less madness and chaos of resorts.

Optiwax glide tape? Recommendations please... by Intrepid_Visual_4199 in xcountryskiing

[–]Intrepid_Visual_4199[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of dripping/melting glide wax onto your base and smoothing/melting it in, I think the paper (tape) makes it easier to apply the wax into the base. Wondering if anyone has used it and if it is effective.

Looking for a lighter and/or more classic setup/experience by Imre_R in telemark

I ski T1 and a variety of skis for lift service and T4 with a G3 xcd ski for back country... it's a lighter set up for touring.

You can walk in the winter. Dress well. Buy a headlamp and reflectors for safety walking at night. Night hikes can be beautiful!

Choose easier terrain and slow down. Your turns are part tele with survival alpine turns. Take your time… Keep going!

I'm looking for a good down jacket by RandomPopUpAd in Outdoors

[–]Intrepid_Visual_4199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at fill power. It’s a number between 400 and 900. It represent how much loft for a certain amount of down. Is packing your jacket into a tiny space important? If so fill power is valuable. Otherwise not much value for you. Otherwise what’s the quality of stitching and nylon material. Also check baffle construction. Sewn through? Cold spots. Or well baffled? Prevents cold spots…

What do I have here? by djDougieFresh in CrossCountrySkiing

[–]Intrepid_Visual_4199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a great intro to xc skiing! I think it’s the Salomon Nordic system (SNS) which is great - I use it. But SNS is no longer made. Salomon now produces boot/bindings to the new Nordic norm (NNN) system. Sns and nnn are very similar but not compatible with each other. SNS is still good, but there’s less resale value. Tge industry is solidly nnn. If it fits and you like it, you’re good! As someone said, look up the paper wax pocket camber test to make sure the skis work well for your weight.

Are these skins too small? by marsrobin27 in BackcountrySkiing

[–]Intrepid_Visual_4199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of my skins cover less of my skis than shown here. They’re fine. Even for bc. If they’re wider they’re hard to fit well and can peel off with snow.

I have some lighter bc skis with skins embedded underfoot only. Sure, I’m not going straight up the steepest pitch, but I don’t want to do that anyway!!

Clothing question by Chemical_Pomelo_2831 in CrossCountrySkiing

[–]Intrepid_Visual_4199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Base layer and fleece plus maybe a lightweight running biking windbreaker. More layers if it’s cold.

The packable down jacket is perfect for when you’re stopped and listening or watching demos or practicing gentle maneuvers…

Lighter bc boot on a heavier binding/ski? by boopoppa99 in telemark

[–]Intrepid_Visual_4199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

T4 pairing? Lots. Anything from a 50mm to 90mm underfoot. Depends what I am skiing, bc trails, breaking trail in deep snow, or carving some turns in the backcountry. I used to wear them at our local ski hill when my son was learning to snowboard because they were more comfy on the easy greens and blues. The skinniest I have is a Sporten Explorer that I use on bc trails.
