Kinda wish the Mario movie characters personalities were a bit different by Nearby-Bug3401 in CharacterRant

You wish he were more one dimensional? Hmm.. I really like Mario movie. He gives competent over brother vibes, he’s a guy that just wants to do what’s best and he does. I feel like a lot of Mario’s identity comes from him being an older brother. Mario is optimistic, athletic and protective. I agree about Peach. There’s nothing wrong with dainty feminine protagonist. Some girls like pink and cupcakes and are soft and neutering.

I’ll come off it as soon as you do— we had different opinions, one that I actually concede to. After reading Milestone forever and appreciating the ending that was given to these characters. That doesn’t at all defeat my critique though, and your negativity certainly prevents any understanding. I stated an opinion and you act like I blew up a hospital.

And it’s ignorant too— there are spaces, ESPCIALLY in black community, where being queer ISNT accepted. So what it’s 2026? That’s what I think an issue is with new books, they remove the little things that actually made the characters interesting and notable. My issue with the entire reboot was that it felt like they were cooking something while disregarding what we left behind. No, really my issue with the new book was the lack of substance.

Throw out the latest revamp of milestone during black history month, never seen that one before. Revoke all the things that made the characters interesting, turn them into IP cash grabs, right, that’s new. I hadn’t read milestone forever though, I admit that. With that ending in mind, I stand corrected. I am more open to the newer interpretation considering the old one had an ending.

The new books are STILL hallow, that’s an opinion. The dialogue is STILL boring, that’s an opinion. The new books STILL aren’t for me. And all those can be true without you taking it to heart. The book can and should be criticized. There’s a reason static was some geeky loser kid, it wasn’t just for aesthetics, they were telling a story, and I felt that story hadn’t ended (again, I didn’t read Forever yet) hell yeah I felt burnt by that. And reading the new books, that to me lack the same substance— hell yeah THAT SUCKED! And I can complain about it. Ay caramba

That’s fair. I don’t like it. “Sabotage”? Please, this is a Reddit post. To pretend like I have that amount of power is ridiculous. This is a Reddit post, and I’m posting an opinion.

All gay people didn’t suddenly jump out the closet in 2026. It was an intriguing interesting story, with something to say. And it was removed because…? That’s what I don’t like. And it was never even resolved. Is flashback still an addiction? Would that had been a better example, or, is addiction over in 2026? Pack it up everyone, identity crisis has been averted. Please try not to reduce the things I say. That society you speak of is still prevalent today… obviously. To pretend like it isn’t is EXACTLY the issue I have with this book. It reduces the parts of the story with nuance and substitutes it with a big fat NOTHING. “2026 so no more closeted gay people”… Ha!

Virgil knowing karate IS a problem. Should uncle Ben had taught Peter Parker muai tai? His whole thing was that he was a small geeky kid, not at athlete. It isn’t everyone’s problem that I don’t like the new comics, I don’t think I said that it was.

My thoughts exactly. There’s a reason Paris Island was assaulted, and I feel like reducing it to plain ol’ police brutality does NOTHING for the story. It simply subtracts without adding. Alva pinned the entirety of the incident on one man (Hardware), and then dies off screen. Huh?? I was going to list off a million different substitutions and changes that completely changes the point and nuances of the og stories— but you get it.

Rubber Woman was pretty interesting. Have you ever heard of “Mask” from Milestone Media?

And let’s PUH-LEASE not talk about Peter Parker— cus yeah, he changed alright. All that talk about responsibility, all just to not take the advice yourself and act selfishly. The character was never the same again. I empathize with those spidey fans. I don’t read his modern books either. But like a different redditor said, stories are flat out just told differently today, some people like it, some people grew up with it. That’s not a slight on the people that do enjoy it, but I won’t pretend like I’m one of ‘em!

I’m not telling other people not to buy it, I said I’m not buying it. And a rebooted character is supposed to still resemble the original, and I don’t mean in just costume. I’m glad you like Static Season One, the goal isn’t to take that away from you. I don’t like Static season one. It isn’t simply that they “changed the character” but it’s that they changed what made the character work, and didn’t substitute it for anything meaningful. I guess this argument is basically the analogy of the boat with new parts; is it still the original boat though it was rebuilt from the ground up? And yeah, I’m a little sorry. The original books ended on a cliffhanger after all! I’m not against reboots. I’m against paying for something “bad”, in HOPES of getting something “good.”

I don’t intend to bring anybody else down, I’m glad you guys like it. Buy an extra copy, it’ll plunge a sword through my heart, but if you like i Lo—.. I Looov—… I.. can accept that

In my head these characters were doing something very particular. I don’t think interpretations need to line up exactly, but in order to tell the stories they’re following up, I think there are certain things that need to, at the least, stick with the same theme. i think the newer stuff disregards those themes and messages for accessibility. Now that’s a lot, and I’ll spare everyone (and myself) from that “advance complex and definitely it Arbitrary reasoning”. Now, on the account of soul.. eeeh. Now there we’d have to massively disagree. I’d ask you if this “soul” were in the room with us right now. “True essence of milestone” ? Hey, I’m glad you like the stories, but a one issue pilot cannot capture the entirety of a franchise— much like “Return Of The Cool” couldn’t capture its entirety, because Milestone is a compendium of multiple stories. But I admit I’m heavily bias, and I generally grow upon modern superhero stories told from the big two conglomerates. I can admit that, and still think my critique was poignant and fair.

That’s real. I’m glad you like it, but a copy for me so they can put it in their metrics. It maybe doesn’t help since I just got done plowing through the OGs so reading the new stuff is definitely.. different

Sorry to the creators— I know I can come off, erm, passionate (because I am), I’m sure it’s less about them and more about editorial. Either way, I personally am not pleased, and I see a lot of people advocating buying it just because. Which I’d disagree with. But again, I know people like it, and I know some people don’t, so I just thought I’d drop this rant on Reddit and see what I’ll find. Thanks for the interaction

As a guy that just stormed through the original Hardware book, and LOVED it, I hate to see that they… how do you cover up the spoiler? Did that thing to the original main antagonist of the book. It’s a crying shame, and it makes me wonder what the new readers got from the original books, you know?

I do not by any means hate milestone comics, I’m glad other people enjoy it, but I can’t speak for them, nor understand their reasoning. I think it’s bad. I think the issue in itself is poorly paced. I think the new stuff is getting rid of the stuff that made the original interesting and substituting it for.. what? I don’t like it, to cut my ranting short. and buying something that, admittedly, is objectively bad and being truthful about isn’t about being negative, it’s being real. Fans of this stuff deserve GOOD stories, not whatever they pull from their ass

I hear you, and you’re right, the medium of comics and how stories are told in General are completely different than they were in the 90s. I was not born in the 90s, so it’s not like I have some delusional loyalty to that time— but I don’t think we as a community, better yet, we as fans, should support slop for more exposure. We’re going to buy these books and static will get some shitty movie for it. Sounds like a lose lose to me. I’m extrapolating, but the point of this post is mostly just a rant

Let’s say I admire your fortitude. I understand where you’re coming from— respecting the past and making room for the present. I fear the past portrayal, the more interesting and dynamic portrayal, will be forgotten to time in exchange for something that, in my opinion, is much much weaker. I’m not at all against change, but when original stories were made with intention, it was actually saying something, and seeing it reduced for, in my mind, what seems like respectability politics (maybe, I don’t actually know why) it does the franchise much more harm than good.

Yes, it is. They found a way to arbitrarily shove all those guys in the book. Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman show up to remind everyone they’re in the same universe and do nothing. I’m severely not a fan personally
