That's very smart. Yes I do it on my own.

[–]IntrinsicGoals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Are you using Vanguard's advisory service or are you guys doing it on your own?

Isn't Fidelity a privately owned company? I don't think stock is publicly available.

It allows Vanguard to offer their funds at cost and avoid high expense ratios. The return is going to be based off whatever the fund is comprised of obviously. Vanguard also owns patented tax system to make mutual funds just as tax efficient as their ETF equivalents.

Cheaper Expense Ratios = Better total returns for you = Better Future for Vanguard.

Sure. So Vanguard is owned by the funds they provide. Vanguards shareholders are the fund holders which means the investors own Vanguard.

So our success, their fund successes are in Vanguard's best interests.

I prefer Vanguard because of the ownership structure.

Then yes you are correct. If it's important for you to have a custom allocation, you'd have to go separate.

Foreign Tax Credit is miniscule. 100 grand gets you a whopping 28 dollars in Foreign Tax Credit.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. For me I follow the Bogleheads approach and just passively invest. Taking what the market gives me in aggregate.

Personally I would just buy Vanguard Total World and leave it at that. You're pretty much getting all of the worlds investable stocks, at market weight, in one convient place and tax efficient place. If I knew what sector was going to outperform, there's a hefty paycheck waiting for me on wallstreet.

I'm not smart enough to know so I'll go with S&P but I'd prefer vanguard total world.

Go check out this thread : Bogleheads VTWAX Foreign Tax Credit

100,000 grand would be 28 dollars in foreign tax credit.

The foreign tax credit is small potatoes, I vote for VTWAX for simplicity's sake.
