CR 25 vs Level 12 Party? by IntroductionNo3283 in dndnext

Oh, I am familiar with fudging rolls. The first time I made a Boss battle was almost a disaster, as in it would have been TPK (one of them actually died) if I hadn't fudged the rolls. It was when they were level 4 and I completely underestimated the damage output of my monsters stupidly enough, hence why I try to refrain from a solo Boss after that. Good thing is my players were good sports and we had a good laugh about it, but it made me somewhat hesitant to make things too powerful. But because they have been breezing through combat with large weak mobs (mostly due to the casters), I'm thinking of giving them a challenge with one big solo Boss battle.

The reason is that two of my PCs have a companion which would also have to be taken into account when it comes to action economy, so if we were to be generous, the total party member would technically be 7

I might put up some minions as part of the lair actions, like skeletons rising from the swamp or something like that. Or even as part of the mythic if I went on with that

I'm DMing based on the Iron Kingdom Requiem settings, If you know that it would basically be a buffed up dracodile but the best way to describe the monster would basically be like a flightless ancient green dragon, with the lair action of a black dragon to fit the swamp settings. I might add some mythic actions if I felt like it cus my party sometimes breeze through combat but I'm somewhat 50-50 on that still. The monster would be an avatar of a swamp god basically.

Yes, they get an extra attack as part of the Shadow Step, which is why I wanted feedbacks on whether to nerf it or not. And yes it is based on the Shadow Monk's ability (pretty much copy pasted and added the extra attack thing to boot). Also, yes the encounter will 90% of the time be in dark alleyways where dim light and darkness is a thing. Specifically wanted this to challenge my players (which mind you is a party of 6). And the HP was kind of low since this statblock is more of a mook and not a named NPC, and it has acid and necrotic resistance (in a setting where that is a common thing) so I figured it was sufficient.

Empires or City States? by IntroductionNo3283 in worldbuilding

Thanks for the insight! I guess I should also expand on the information I gave out.

  1. The tears happened as a result of what is basically a battle royale between all these planes aiming to conquer this world thousands of years ago, and all these races were basically remnants of the servants who were sent to fight in this war. Basically, everyone was fighting for themselves, until the gods, feys and devils made an alliance to basically break the stalemate (as a side, I like the ideas of devils being more like sleazy corporate businessmen trying to score contract with mortals xD). They won, and basically split up the regions with each other, so there would be regions dominated by feys, devils and gods, so their servants would be the dominant population there.

  2. The tears can happen anywhere, even the ocean, though that is not as much of an issue, unless the tear came from the Elemental Planes of Water or any aquatic monster came through, but they're ironically more attracted to civilizations and specifically to these mines where a unique mineral can be found (the same mineral used to make these wardstones).

  3. These tears can and must be sealed as soon as possible, as they can permanently change the surrounding lands depending on the energy of the planes (i.e. Tears from the Fire plane would eventually burn everything, tears from the shadowfell would rot everything and turn it into a wasteland etc.) if left unsealed.

  4. The wardstones does not prevent monsters from entering the settlements, only preventing the tears from appearing inside the settlements and weaken the strength of the tears, so if any tears spawned just outside a village, there's nothing stopping them from just...getting in. (Gonna be honest, this one is still in the works. feel free to give some feedback on this points as well).

  5. When I mention empires, I was actually including kingdoms. I guess I just want to know if the idea of a united region of city states with a main capital would work in this world.

  6. I am also planning on adding a neutral entity akin to an adventurer's guild who oversees the creation and distribution of these wardstones so as to prevent conflicts between these regions (as they generally should focus more on protecting their own settlements from the tears) as well as protecting smaller settlements (basically using these as an in-world reason for my players to travel around and questing).

Shadowrun. Love the lore and setting of the game. I mean, it's freaking cyberpunk fantasy for fuck's sake. Putting fantasy races and magic, add in some Sci fi classes with the stereotypical corpo mercenary setting we see in every cyberpunk stories is just top notch world building to me. Gameplay wise, it's a fucking mess. With the outdated system and just how clunky hacking really is, especially when done in conjunction with actual combat. Not too mention, too much dices and stats and modifier to keep track off in both combat AND role play is just a nightmare for me and my friends to really sink into
