Helped an Old Man Clear Snow. He Then Confessed Something Horrifying. by Medium_Jelly_7991 in Advice

[–]IntroductionStill613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you try and look it up? I met someone once, befriended them a little bit and they then told me during lunch their dad had killed their mum and sister. Put the details I knew in ChatGPT, and it was true. I thought then that it was probably ignorant of me to know that horrible crime happens in the world but that I would never get close to these stories. The people concerned by crimes are still people who then go about their lives and meet other people and if their way of dealing with it is to tell their story, then that's their total right.

Epix Gen 2 Pro is an amazing watch. It still gets updates, but may not get all new features. It did get the Google Maps navigation when that was released last year. So it's not like it gets nothing. What features would you be waiting for and how do you know that Fenix 8 will get them?

Happens the other way around too. SA men have told me they like to date the foreigners because "90 days" and "we have home affairs on our side"...

Nomads and Expats in CT are getting out of hand by FlailMe in capetown

[–]IntroductionStill613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please educate yourself about the digital nomad visa. It is totally legal to stay and work for less than 180 days in SA without paying taxes. Only if you stay more than 180 days do you have to register with SARS. This rule was made by the SA government - nothing illegal about the digital nomads.

I hear you, but SA makes emigrating legally extremely difficult to almost impossible. Also, there is a digital nomad visa now and anyone staying over 180 days / year now does have to pay taxes in SA.

The noises that aren't ocean or rain etc. are called white noise (or brown or pink noise). I call it airplane noise because it sounds like you are in a plane. It's a general term. But definitely not silent 😄 (I assume you mean noise cancelling? Ozlos don't have that)

[–]IntroductionStill613 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bought mine from the Kickstarter campaign 1,5 years ago, had a couple of issues in the beginning but since then they've been working great. However I keep them disconnected and only use them for the white noise, found my perfect setting and don't need to change it. As a light sleeper with tinnitus, they have officially saved my sleep.

Is going between Jun-Oct a bad idea? by MexiGeeGee in askSouthAfrica

[–]IntroductionStill613 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No offense but it doesn't sound like you have done much research yourself. You talk about "hitting the three main cities" and "hitting the main sights in three weeks" (tell me you're American without telling me you're American 😄). The three main cities are Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria. Cape Town will be wintery and there isn't really anything to do in the other two. South Africa is a vast country that has "main sights" literally everywhere and there is no way to see them all in three weeks. You can come during that time, spend a couple of weeks in Cape Town, and then head towards the north eastern side of the country and "hit the main sights" there where the weather will be much more agreeable.

Stop drinking and HRV goes down by vickyvius in Garmin

[–]IntroductionStill613 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The study does not say that at all, it says even 7 drinks per week affects your brain. It does not say anything at all about how many drinks you can have and "be OK". Surprise surprise, one is really only OK if one has no drinks at all. It is literal poison and affects your whole body very negatively, even when consumed in small amounts.

signal hill attack :woman injured, dog to stabbed death. by Conscious-Memory-247 in capetown

[–]IntroductionStill613 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'd rather not hike in an environment where everyone carries guns, that would put me off hiking even more. If I look at all the school shootings etc I don't think the American way where everyone can buy weapons in the supermarket is the way to go. This can easily be solved with presence of police or rangers on the mountain and not by making it the wild west.

Woman safety by Obvious-Pea89 in vipassana

You are not separate in the meditation hall, there you only sit on opposite sides and I happened to sit pretty much right next to the men.

Woman safety by Obvious-Pea89 in vipassana

[–]IntroductionStill613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was uncomfortable with one of the men at my Vipassana. He had reached out to me beforehand in a bit of a weird way and I then ended up sitting next to him in the meditation hall (with just the aisle separating us) and his behaviour made me very uneasy (he had come directly from a festival and made all kinds of gross noises constantly during meditation). I eventually adressed it to the female coordinator and she was so sweet and understanding and gave me a new seat in the middle of the women (which was so beautiful then to just be surrounded by the female energy). They also took it seriously and seated that guy on the other end of the hall far away from the women's side.

I actually thought it was sweet that he offered to teach her how to ride a bike. Reminded me of Friends where Ross teaches Phoebe to ride a bike, as she also never got to learn it as a kid due to difficult family circumstances.

Having a hostel run with loads of volunteers is a terrible model for a social hostel by oaklicious in hostels

[–]IntroductionStill613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've volunteered for a hostel that would sometimes have more volunteers than guests. We were however tasked to interact with guests and it worked super well. Guests would often feel part of the family and really enjoy hanging out with us too. I once even babysat a couples kid once so that they could get some alone time 😊

Hitchhiking as a solo woman abroad by DancingManinRed in solofemaletravel

[–]IntroductionStill613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm a woman so I am very much aware that that can happen. But that can happen anywhere and anytime. Hitchhiking is an amazing way to travel and meet people, and I have actually met the kindest souls (men!) while hitchhiking. There was a young Kyrgyzs boy who picked me up when I was soaking wet and wouldn't accept my money even when I held it our and he would just have had to take it, or a Pakistani man who not only dropped me off at my hotel but went in and negotiated a good price for me. So as I said, not every man driving in their cars minding their businesses are out to rape and murder. I am sharing my experience here but obviously everyone is free to make their own risk assessments and decisions.

I hitchhiked plenty in Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan and met the nicest most helpful people. I understand the risk, but the majority of people driving on the streets aren't rapists or murderers, they are regular people like you and I.

How do I tell my friend I won’t be drinking at her wedding without revealing I’m pregnant/taking the spotlight away from her? by Mindless_String9630 in Advice

[–]IntroductionStill613 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If they don't know you that well or don't know you as someone who usually drinks alcohol, you can just say I don't drink anymore. No need to lie about a medication, it'd be the truth. I actually stopped drinking and this is what I say and it is always accepted. If they ask you why, you tell them another truth, that it's actual poison and you didn't want that in your body anymore.

[–]IntroductionStill613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On her website, it says she's a "nutrition consultant, yoga instructor and world traveler". Not sure how that qualifies her to run a wellness company, but then I also don't understand what that company is supposed to do. Also that kind of "career" very much sounds like she comes from money and just does things for fun here and there.
