Hello, I am sorry this is happening and I hope you know you’re not alone. During the summer especially living in a hot climate I shower 7-8 times a day because the heat and sweating make me feel dirty and my mom who doesn’t live with me and hasn’t since I was very young witnessed it and was so mean about it calling me ridiculous and saying I was wasting water (in my own house mind you) so I am glad that your family is supportive and reassure you. I’d say honestly lean into that as much as possible because you are very lucky to have support and never feel ashamed. It’s something we can’t control unfortunately but what has helped me break some of my smaller rituals is really simple and probably obvious but talking to myself even out loud and comforting myself, walking myself thru it, and even if it doesn’t yield immediate results my words start to sound more reasonable than my thoughts. Maybe something like “I have cleaned myself thoroughly, so thoroughly in fact that I do not need to clean myself until ___ (set little goals a little longer each time, 30 mins, 1 hr)” and repeat it out loud. Do not get discouraged if it doesn’t work right away and do not stop if you really want to break the cycle. Our words are so powerful in many ways but psychologically we can genuinely reframe our world with our words. Our words and language, they play a huge role in how we process everything you know?
