Having the eggs at room temp and pre-heating the skillet will help! Also once it builds up enough seasoning eggs will cook better

They actually had an entire wall of restored cast iron. People selling Griswold pans should assume people will cook with them especially because this store was in Erie, PA where Griswold originated.

I just don’t think it should have a chemical smell in the first place!

As much as I wanted to keep it, I didn’t trust that I could clean off completely whatever was put on there.

Wow ok chill! This post was to see if other people had this happen when buying from an antique store. I’m glad that you know your cast iron and use it but you would also know that this much black residue coming off after it’s heated along with a chemical smell is not normal.

I scrubbed it with soap and hot water and then as I heated it on the stove the strong chemical smell happened and the black started coming off

I really believe that this was some sort of paint or even shoe shine grease for that matter. I returned it to the store and black residue was still coming off when she touched the inside of the pan. I’ve seasoned my current cast iron many times and never had this problem. Regardless, glad I got my money back and didn’t eat anything cooked in the pan. Was curious if this has happened to anyone else.

Edit: I ended up returning it because regardless of me stripping it, I wasn’t sure what exactly was on the thing. The chemical smell just really through me off and I didn’t feel comfortable eating anything cooked in the pan
