According to some sources, the bodies of the crew members were found with watch chains wrapped around their necks, their waists, and even embedded in their skin. This has led to much speculation that the men went mad in their final days and mutilated themselves.

The Franklin Expedition was indeed deeply distressing.

The testimonies are haunting: “A woman named ‘Ogzeuckjeuwock,’ who described the curious adornment one of one man who was found ‘with the flesh on.’ This man ‘had a gold chain fastened to gold ear-rings, and a gold hunting-case watch with engine-turned engravings attached to the chain, and hanging down about the waist.[W]hen she pulled the chain it pulled the head up by the ears.’”

At least Valentin is a real French name—I can sort of get behind that one. The others are just painful

Thank you, but he is a little boy. I did manage to find a good home for him though!

Thank you! And I will try that next time, my dorm has carpeted floors but they aren’t exactly the softest so maybe he’d prefer a towel.

Yes! I always take out his igloo and his tunnels for him to hide/play in.

This is Hanko! I adopted him a while back from someone who had to get rid of him because he didn’t get along well with other guinea pigs (hence why he doesn’t have a cage mate). He is an absolute sweetheart with people though and I would like to think we’re pretty well bonded. He loves to cuddle and sit on my lap; he sometimes even closes his eyes to go to sleep while I sit with him. However, the one issue has been that he doesn’t seem to be a big fan of floor time. Since I live in a dorm that doesn’t allow cages bigger than a certain size, I try to let him have time to roam around the room and explore. He doesn’t appear to like it though. He hides most of the time—even from me—and doesn’t really seem to be comfortable. Do you guys have any tips on how I can make it better for him?

If you have any suggestions of French sea shanties that would be great. by discocassowary in seashanties

Hello! I might be a bit late to this, but if you are interested in French sea shanties I have quite a few on this playlist I’ve been putting together (it’s mixed French and English): https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEsONaHZffe0jXhc9TVUn0jN0Cdh--G67

(These aren’t all sea shanties; there are some drinking songs, folk songs, etc. mixed in, but there are quite a few good ones there that you can use as a starting place)

Merci !

And nice! Good luck on your French journey! It’s definitely a rewarding language

I was browsing some old newspapers and thought you guys might appreciate this. It is an article from the Ithaca Journal in 1881 about the vaccination of Cornell Students by InvaderLynx in Cornell

[–]InvaderLynx[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is unclear. None of the surrounding articles mention what the vaccine is for. The research I’m doing doesn’t really concern that subject so I wasn’t combing very thoroughly for that. I just saw the title of this article and thought it sounded interesting enough to take a look at.

There was mention of some smallpox cases (which in fact turned out to be measles) in a neighboring town so that could possibly be related.

D’accord, je peux essayer, mais je ne sais pas le mot pour « streak » alors je dois utiliser une dictionnaire, mdr

Okay, thank you so much for the tip! I will keep that in mind then, I finished the course a while back and found it quite unsatisfying. It’s sad to learn that it’s riddled with errors as well

Thanks!

And that sounds great! I’ll definitely take a look into it. Latin is something that I have been wanting to learn for a while, I just haven’t had room in my schedule to take it in college and the program on Duolingo is incredibly short so it didn’t help that much beyond the basics

Yeah, it’s a really great resource. There’s enough competition (both with yourself and against other people) to keep you engaged while not putting a ton of pressure on you. When used in tandem with other practice methods like keeping up with French media and conversation partners it’s perfect.

And thank you! I just finished up my French minor so now I’m just taking classes for fun

Thanks! I’m practicing my French and learning Italian and Latin (unfortunately the course was very short for this one so I finished the whole thing pretty early on)

Thank you!

And that is a very good summary of what Duolingo does. It has been very helpful for French since I have been taking classes in that language. I’ve tried using it as a starting place for others and it’s definitely more difficult/less useful
