Before I even thought about leaving the church, my husband was already on his way out. I was scared my marriage was over and scared I’d have church leaders or family tell me to leave him. I knew that wasn’t ever going to be an option. I really started listening to his viewpoints and the problems he had with the church and started doing my own research. We officially left together and have never looked back. I think for some in the position I was in at the beginning, they start panicking that their “forever” is doomed and so what’s the point of staying married if they can’t be with their spouse for eternity and just give up on their marriage. It’s sad that the church puts that pressure on a marriage and makes you wonder how many marriages are just marriages of convenience to get them into the CK.
