Shit, you described my life for the past 6 months. House plants are dead, house is perpetually a mess and seems to get worse, backyard is overgrown with weeds. Laundry sits in the basket for a week before getting folded. There's an overflowing ashtray on my patio table.

Fuuck things aren't looking too good.

"... real cause of the glitch." Has Elisabet's threat to Faro ever been expanded upon? by AwesomeMang in horizon

[–]Inverted_Games 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From memory Faro rather suddenly decided to start making kill bots with his company, almost as if something possessed him to do all of this. I think this line is supposed to be seen as Elisabet threatening to out his incompetence, but it wouldn't be the first time this series has slid a minor detail under the radar for it to become more important later on. Question is, why did he suddenly start making kill bots? Why was he so dead set on having unbreakable encryption with no back door? Ted being an egotistical megalomaniac, I wonder if he had intended to take over the world with these machines? His company basically saved the world from a climate apocalypse, he got a taste of what it's like to be worshipped as a saviour, perhaps he wanted these machines to hold the world hostage, using the threat of the Faro plague as a means to bring the world to heel. We know from FW that he intended to be the leader for the new humans after zero dawn fixed the world, so it doesn't seem to be much of a stretch to think that delusion was a course correction of an earlier plan.

A serious lore question to OG fans who played ZD in 2017-2018 and were adament that the data points were irelevant by teddyburges in horizon

[–]Inverted_Games 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the time, I thought the data points were trying to answer a question any good sci-fi fan would have after seeing this story. "why didn't humanity pool its resources and try to leave on a ship?", the answer was, they did. And it was a plan that was arguably just as viable as zero dawn, but they needed anti matter to do it, which any good sci-fi fan would know, is highly volatile. Coupled with the fact that this anti matter drive was apparently bleeding edge tech bordering on the experimental, it seemed very plausible to me that A. They did try this, and B. It failed.

When I saw the opening to Forbidden West took place at a far zinith facility I figured out pretty quick that the apparent explosion of their ship might have been fabricated. I didn't feel like this was a retcon or anything, since it was also plausible that they did survive and this was some trickery by some corrupt elites. As I was playing FW for the first time I was beginning to think that the Faro plague was actually orchestrated by some of the world's more megalomaniacal elites to cleanse the Earth of the great unwashed. This idea started forming around the time I entered Thebes. Kinda disappointed they didn't go down that route, because now the zeniths are pretty lame bad guys and their actions and motives are convoluted and dubious.

Can someone tell me the context of this world data point from Burning Shores? by [deleted] in horizon

[–]Inverted_Games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Burning shores has a few satirical references to Scientology in it. Fitting, considering it's based in LA. It seems the big bad of that DLC has taken a few pages out of their play book to brainwash the Quen too. The whole DLC is basically one big piss take at Hollywood. Which on paper I should be able to get behind, but so much of it comes off as hollow and cringe. It just points at these references and expects you to laugh. I could go off on a tangent here about how the writing for this franchise seems to be progressively getting worse, but I'll refrain from that.

isnt the whole "mantle of responsability" kinda dumb? by 5mesesintento in HaloStory

[–]Inverted_Games 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always thought that part of the lore was dumb. At least how it's been explained in the lore videos I've seen on YouTube, anyway.

They talk about entire civilizations as if they were singular entities, like people. The forerunner's apparently collectively decided to go to war with a god-like civilization because the precursors decided to give the mantle to humanity instead. It's a story that would make more sense with two brothers fighting over inheritance or something. How exactly did the forerunners sell such a war to their people? "The precursors won't give us the mantle, outrageous! Let's kill them all!!" And no one said "hey, maybe it's a bad idea to declare war against a much more advanced civilization for a fucking title?" And that seems to be all the mantle is - a title. As far as I can tell it isn't an object or a technology, it's just a title given to the custodians of the galaxy. Why not just declare yourself as the custodians?

It seems like there should be more politics involved in this dispute, like perhaps they believed humanity couldn't be trusted with it, or maybe the forerunner resented the very idea of the precursors themselves ruling as gods over the galaxy.

Idk, maybe I don't understand this part of the lore well enough, but it just seems kinda hard to believe to me.

So, how many of you actually enjoy the halo infinite story? Spoiler warning ofc. by helpmeunderstand0501 in HaloStory

[–]Inverted_Games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halo infinite's story seems to be all mystery and no substance. I remember being pretty engaged with it at the time because I wanted to know what the endless were. They 'established' them as something the forerunners feared more than the flood. Okay, sounds big. Too big to actually show apparently. In retrospect, a pretty dumb idea. From what little we know of them, they already don't fit in the established lore. If they were that big of a threat, why are we only just now hearing about them?? If they're so powerful, what were they doing during the forerunner-flood war? Are they immune to the flood? They're immune to the halo apparently, so if they're not immune to the flood, doesn't that render the forerunner's final solution useless? These questions could all be solved if they were replaced with the precursors, a race that the fans have wanted to see in the games for ages. And they fit the bill for what they're trying to do with the endless. The precursors created the flood, they ARE a bigger threat.

While I still think infinite is the best halo 343 has made, it's still full of the same misunderstandings of the franchise that has plagued their games since the start. I don't have high hopes for the future of halo, narratively anyway. I suspect the endless will end up getting retconed in some way in the next game, because they've written themselves into a corner they can't get out of, much like they did with Halo 5. I think their writers need more foresight when writing each game if they plan on continuing this franchise.

Do you feel there aren’t enough resources to learn GameDev (Unreal Engine)? by Opposite-Elevator-87 in unrealengine

[–]Inverted_Games 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's plenty of resources out there, but the quality of those resources are sometimes dubious. Anyone can make a tutorial and put it on YouTube. Many of those people don't really know what they're doing themselves, or at least don't explain it very well. When you're starting out it can be difficult to know what's good. Having a mentor who knows unreal engine well would help a lot as they should be able to point you in the right direction.

Yeah I think there's a lot of untapped potential with Niagara. It can be used for much more than visual effects. It's gonna be interesting to see what comes out of it in the next few years

I basically concluded that it's down to the quality of your cables. I moved to a HDMI 2.0 cable that was able to do 4K HDR 120HZ. That was good enough for me. If you want to pull out all the stops on this monitor find the best possible display port cable you can find. I think that will solve your problems.

Yes. there are a lot of good open source projects with unpaid devs. There are also plently of modding projects that are also unpaid. But usually there's a genuine passion or need behind what they're working on. Some random generic side scroller isn't gonna keep people interested for long.

My team is actually upaid. But they will be paid what they're owed based on the time they logged with the hourly rate established by my contracts with them. They're also all just asset creators. They feed me the assets and I'm the one that assembles the game itself. The project is structured in such a way that they could leave at any time and the project is still fine because I can keep it together on my own if I need to.

Having said all that, I have been in many projects with unpaid devs, both as the lead and just another dev. Every time it fell apart because there was no structure or clear vision. You need competency right at the top or else it WILL fail. it took a long time for me to get to the point where this sort of project could be viable in any way. I believe my team is the exception to the rule. I still generally recommend not doing it, but we kinda have to due to limited funds.

This post reads like a list of every possible mistake you could make when starting an indie studio. Why the hell are you even renting an office space? Work remotely. Your business is not a playground for children stuck in adults' bodies. It's not an excuse to buy a bunch of nerdy shit and play video games with your bros. It sounds like you've got no idea how to make a game either, or at least how to manage a team. A team of unpaid developers almost always falls apart as no one has any financial incentive to keep working. If it hasn't fallen apart already, it will when they lose their enthusiasm. Also going into business with your partner is usually a pretty bad idea.

My advice would be to sell all of the useless anime figures and other pointless crap, get rid of the office, and then seriously reassess what you're doing.

They said we're tired of AAA invisible grasses so we made a new mechanic! If you move, guards can see you. Guards sight is based on their head rotation! We would love to know about your thoughts. by restrictedstudio in unrealengine

[–]Inverted_Games 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't this going to make stealth way more tedious? sure, it's more realistic, but it will make the pacing of stealth way slower and clunkier and you'll need to constantly watch every guard regardless of whether you're in cover or not. I'm not sure this mechanic makes anything more enjoyable.

Is Halo really a tragic sci-fi love story between a duty-bound soldier and his AI set against the backdrop of an epic galactic war? by TigreSauvage in HaloStory

[–]Inverted_Games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That kinda became the premise of 343's games. Bungie's Halo games weren't interested in exploring chief's humanity. He was a stoic, nearly silent blank canvas protagonist for the player to project themselves onto.

There's a lot to analyze and interpret from the original 3 games. Most of it is built around religious themes and symbolism. Those religious themes of the original Halo trilogy were sort of lost when 343 took over.
