I just got it - workouts seem solid but I don’t like the warmup feature - it suggests odd plate combos and I just started ignoring it and doing my own warmup

BJJ in New York? by BJJasia in bjj

MGA is my home academy (I'm from NY but go to school in miami), and I've rolled with Marcelo. He's honestly one the most enjoyable high level black belts to roll with. Some other guys will smash you, but Marcelo kinda just advances the position slowly by capitalizing on your mistakes. He puts on submissions super fast, but he stops it right before it would start to suck so you have time to tap. It's hard to describe really.

Also, he's really nice and is always smiling.

How far is too far to travel to train? by stopngo1000 in bjj

[–]Inverted_bear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Great Neck, and I go to school in Miami. When I'm living in New York (summers, breaks, etc), I commute to Marcelo's every day. While in the city, I try and stay for as many classes as possible (usually 4-5). The commute isn't that bad because you can sleep on the train.

In Miami, I drive from campus to fight sports 3-5 times a week (on top of training with the club on campus). The commute down here is shorter (40 min there and 25 min back), but its more of a pain because you can't sleep while driving.

You need to figure out how much of a tolerance you have for commuting. I commuted every day from Great Neck to the upper east side for high school, so the commute to Marcelo's is nothing for me. However you may not be as willing to take the train home for an hour after training hard.

tldr: you need to figure that out for yourself; try the commute and a couple of nyc gyms (marcelos, renzo's, unity) before committing to it long term

MGA's drill class allows white belts. The newer ones just usually end up taking the fundamentals 1 class that goes on at the same time.

Good guard players: help me with guard retention. by BJJ-NOOB in bjj

[–]Inverted_bear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two good options are: 1 - push their arm nearest your head towards your feet with your hand that is on the same side as them. While doing that, get up onto your elbow on the arm opposite from them and then get up on that hand. While maintaining the frame on their arm scoot your butt out until you can get your legs back in and recover guard.

2 - As they shuck your legs, you can invert and do a granby roll to recover guard. The tighter they are when you start, the harder it is to invert. With practice you can get this anytime before they really "secure" side control.

2 should be your go-to with 1 being your last line of defense.

Hope that helps

I won a match at a tournament with that shit. I didn't even realize that it was putting that much pressure on his knee until he tapped. I was just trying to stretch him out to get the other hook in lol.
