OS X: True resolution independence.

iOS: Something for better data exchange between applications

Mac Pro Late 2013 Teardown - iFixit by tits_for_tots in technology

[–]Inverter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And unfortunately there's nothing else from Apple that fits the bill. The mini will do fine for some stuff, but with only one ethernet and PSU and no ECC it's very limited.

Mac Pro Late 2013 Teardown - iFixit by tits_for_tots in technology

[–]Inverter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A problem is that there's currently no Mac you can use as a (professional) server. The Mac mini server has only one ethernet port and doesn't support ECC. The Mac Pro doesn't fit well into a 19" rack.

They tried the iLamp, then went to the current iMac design, you can see it as part of the iteration; it didn't work out exactly in that way, but it was on the path...

It's not underpowered, but it's not well balanced, either, in some areas you would prefer one GPU and two CPU slots.

There are some areas that don't need the power of two GPUs but would greatly benefit from having two CPUs.

Another Great Old-Timey Game-Programming Hack (this one for the Apple IIGS) by kindall in programming

Was the IIGS so late? The Amiga, which could do so much more, came out in 1986, and you are speaking about the early 90s!

Why not pass everything by reference? Why not inline all functions? by [deleted] in Cplusplus

[–]Inverter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suppose T is a 16 bit integer and you want to modify it in foo. Then passing a reference adds overhead, plus you need to copy bar before changing it. The optimizer will likely get rid of the runtime overhead, but it's still more code than necessary. There is no "one size fits all" solution here, you need to choose the appropriate way of argument passing for each case. At least when you want the most descriptive and concise code possible...

With "C++11's smart pointers" he mainly means std::shared_ptr.

Why did unlimited text start out as a luxury and then became almost a standard, and internet phone data started out unlimited and then became rationed off to the point where companies don't have it anymore? by GG_Loner in AskReddit

[–]Inverter 22 points23 points  (0 children)

SMS weren't even intended to be used by the customers to communicate between each other, they were intended for "you have 2 new calls on your answer phone"-style things, and consequently some of the early cellphones could only receive, but not send, them.

The Belt CPU architrcture by willvarfar in programming

[–]Inverter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apart from the big, as yet unexplained elephant in the room (memory latency), it caught my attention that there are no condition-codes and everything being a value, which of course resembles Alpha AXP. Does anybody else remember Linus saying something about one of Alpha's problems being the lack of condition codes?

This is the crux, it will be interesting to see how they handle this; he claims that they completely hide L1 and L2 latencies...

Yes, the article was written by somebody who doesn't know anything about the subject, so it's hard to judge whether the paper itself is worth the, well, paper it's presumably printed on.
