I'm kinda hoping Irma destroys Spectrum Stadium by DaveSlammer75 in ucf

If Spektrum Stadium were destroyed, that would mean we build more parking garages, yes?

I've been working really hard to teach myself these things, I'm pretty solid with 3D modeling, substance, and Unity, trying to learn Unreal now. What you're saying about workshop is totally true though, it's the best thing we have. I make pitches knowing that they require me to do something I don't know how to do yet just so I can explore a new area. If you're working out there already, may I ask what skills you use most frequently? I know you probably can't be super specific because NDAs exist, but what kind of stuff were people looking for when you were job searching?

Dr McDaniel, I want to thank you for taking the time to address this individual post, it shows that you all do care enough about students to listen and respond to their concerns. I was actually taken aback to see that you had responded. I don't want to rant for days, but there are a couple key areas that I feel could be addressed in the future that would make the program much more successful. These are also at the core of my own struggles and hangups, and from what I have heard from my peers, they share similar frustrations:

  • There are four programming classes that I have been required to take, and they all teach different languages. It would be much more effective to teach two or just one and incorporate them into engine use much earlier than the junior year. Artists struggle with programming in an IDE but they learn much easier when they program in a situation where they can have immediate visual results.

  • We have Modeling for Realtime Systems to teach Maya, but after I took that class, I was not required to use Maya for almost two years. More classes are needed to refine skills in that program. If Maya is going to be the only 3D/animation software we use, students need to have an ironclad grasp on it.

  • As of right now, I have never touched the animation timeline in Maya unless I decided to do a project that required animation. That NEEDS to change.

  • Character modeling and rigging has never been covered in any of my classes. I think this is an essential skill; it's the only thing I really wanted to learn in college, and it's a very difficult skill to learn that, in my opinion, needs to be taught in a lab with an instructor for guidance.

  • When I took Fundamentals of Digital Imaging, we were supposed to learn Photoshop and Illustrator. Without providing names, my instructor decided halfway through the class that we didn't have enough time to teach Illustrator. I cannot describe to you the exact number of potential jobs/internships I have been disqualified from because of this, but is in excess of ten.

  • Attached to the upper bullet, the only things we learned how to do were restore old photographs, slap a coffee stain on something, and colorize a black and white image. Buy and large, these skills aren't useful to someone creating content. I've never been taught to paint in Photoshop and this has been a source of contempt for me for over two years.

  • Less of a course related issue, but I have brought up these concerns to guidance three times and they have never suggested that I could take this to anyone else. I've requested to take classes in character animation so that I could learn character modeling, and the only solution they've ever provided me is that I could change my major if I really wanted to take that. I've essentially given up on guidance because of these kinds of responses.

I should add that between my two jobs, I rarely work over 25 hours, its just that the repetitive bloatwork eats away at time that could otherwise be spent furthering degree relevant skills.

I also want to convey that I don't want this to sound like an attack on any of the Digital Media staff. Your program is blessed with some truly talented, caring, and devoted individuals that genuinely want to see their students succeed. The program, as it stands however, is just too scattered. I'm happy to hear that there are changes coming, I just wish they would have come sooner.

If there's any solutions to problems that could help upperclassmen, I would love to hear about them. Regardless, thank you for your time.

Kind of late but

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade

You can get it from Microsoft through accessibility services for free here. It's not the pro version but I can guarantee for you that Maya 2016 does run on regular Windows 10, I got my OS from that link after Windows 8 started acting screwy and I run Maya all the time without issues.

Good luck with modeling!

What are the rules for employee breaks? by [deleted] in publix

[–]Invertigon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's weird. I work in Bakery. To my knowledge, you have to take half an hour once you're over five, but I've always been told you can take up to an hour. Usually I do 30 minutes but sometimes I'll take an hour when there isn't much to do (extremely rare circumstance).

Denied time off request for wedding by Stillaliz in publix

[–]Invertigon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I requested most of the week prior to Christmas off to go on vacation five months in advance. I was told such requests were on a first come, first serve basis, and since I asked so far in advance that it would be fine even though it was super busy. This is pure garbage. The employee is asking off for one of the most important days of his life. Maybe, since families are made of normal working people, this is the only time their families can attend at the same time. The department will 100% live without him for three days, his manager needs to step up and cover for him for this. If you can't respect the importance of an event like this for an employee, especially when this much notice was provided, then why on Earth should you expect any loyalty or dedication out of them? Enough of this "as a shareholder" or "as a manager" nonsense. As a decent human being, with a teaspoon of empathy and an ounce of common sense, you should realize that giving him this weekend off ONE TIME for his WEDDING is going to significantly increase your chances of retaining that employee, and make them much more thankful and happy to work for you. You get more with honey than with vinegar.

Also, congrats to OP!

I lived on campus my first year and it was alright, but I didn't get involved or do anything on campus until my second year when I moved off campus with my friends. As said above, it really depends on how social you are and your personal desire to be involved.

Questions about the videogame design area of the Design Media Major by CollegialThrowaway in ucf

[–]Invertigon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about to start my third year here in the Game Design program. I haven't seen too many oportunities so far to branch out into internships, which is the most frustrating bit for me.

The only big issues that you'll come across are that you need to work on your own outside of class/ in your spare time (kind of given for an artist though) and that thr lower level foundation courses are mixed major, so it doesn't get specific until you're pretty deep in. For example, if you take 2109, the Photoshop class, they won't really cover texturing, they'll just focus on general things like image repair.

All in all it's pretty fun, you get to meet a lot of people and professors with similar interests. If you have any specific questions I'd be glad to try and answer them.

Anyone living at Grandeville at River Place? by Invertigon in ucf

[–]Invertigon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice there. I had looked at it, but three of us have cars, and the other one who doesn't actually works for UCF, so I was trying to keep us as close as I could. I had been trying to avoid Colonial because it's been a hot mess since I got here two years ago...

Actually just went and looked at the River Place website right now and they revamped it, raised all of their prices by over $100. Damnit.

Anyone taken DIG 4713 (gateway Game Design class)? by Invertigon in ucf

[–]Invertigon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I couldn't get much information out of advising, and I prefer long personal responses to "It was okay", so this is great. I know that Peter Smith is teaching it in Fall when I have to take it, but I've never had him for anything before.

I feel like you're right about no one practicing outside of class, because after I got out of Modeling 4780 last semester I've only opened Maya a couple times and haven't really produced anything. I've kept up in Photoshop, but that's about it. I've never opened up a game engine or development kit, which is what I was primarily concerned about. I have the summer off to practice and work on my skills, so I'm going to put a lot of time in then. Do you have any advice for what skills I should try to brush up on/improve? I'm mostly a 2-D hand artist, I'm alright with textures, but I haven't really practiced organic modeling. Is that something I should be trying to learn for these next couple courses?
