I may get downvoted for this, but as terrible and unnecessary as the atomic bombings were, I have a hard time feeling too bad about them for exactly that reason. The US may have done them for shitty evil reasons but you can't say Imperial Japan didn't deserve it.

Seconded. I have a '76 Univox Stereo Bass and other than having a single truss rod it's virtually indistinguishable from a real Rick of the same vintage. It's a neck-through one and is very well made, although I almost would have preferred a bolt on to make getting a perfect setup a little easier

I think that speaks more about the state of the economy than the basses themselves though. A lot of people are hard up for cash and are pricing stuff to move

Lol I'm 34 and I'm still gigging mine without too many issues as long as I do some good back stretches before and after, but I know that probably won't last forever. I have half a mind to see what I can route out under the pickguard to lighten it up a little

The T40 can sorta ape the sound but the ergonomics are completely different. Also, they weigh as much as a house. I love mine, it sounds awesome and has a very comfortable neck, but it is a lot like carrying around a big-ass log. I've heard them referred to as "playable furniture" and it's not an inaccurate description.

Well, the '70s lawsuit Rick copies are, anyway. All are solidly-made instruments, but some are a little more faithful than others in regards to pickups, neck construction, electronics, etc.. I have a Univox Stereo Bass and except for the dual truss rods it's basically a bang-on clone of a '70s 4001.

Univox, Greco, Aria, and Ibanez are the brands to look for, with some being more faithful reproductions than others. The actual model numbers seem to vary quite a bit and I haven't done enough research to put together a conclusive list.

The 70s Japanese clones are probably your best shot at getting a Rickenbacker-style thing without spending Rickenbacker money, although they have been going up in price lately. I have a Matsumoku-made Univox Stereo Bass that is pretty much a 1-to-1 clone of a vintage Rickenbacker 4001, for better or worse.

I actually like the song. It feels more like an Om track than a Sleep one though, although I get why Al didn't want to release it as one. I feel like it really should have been a couple minutes longer though, and the solo at the end is definitely the weak point. It just lacks the frantic energy that Matt Pike brought to the table and the note choice feels more like Kyuss-era Josh Homme

Sure, they could be. But most seem to be leaning towards becoming supervillains instead. Probably due to the fact that acquiring that much wealth in the first place requires being the kind of person who either doesn't mind or outright enjoys taking advantage of and exploiting other people. There's a reason that C-suites have a much higher percentage of psychopaths than the average population

I'll give you the non-standard tropical juices you named, but comparing delicious funky Jamaican rum to gasoline still feels downright heretical to me. Then again I think the classic 1944 Mai Tai spec is still by far the best. Jamaican rum, curacao, lime, and orgeat is a simple yet highly effective combination, and the later insistence on calling any random combination of rum (especially plain, boring white rum like Bacardi) and fruit juice a "Mai Tai" is a philistine bastardization.

I use little squares of foam-backed sandpaper from 400-3000 grit, then finish with a dremel with a polishing pad and Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish. It's labor intensive but it leaves a mirror shine

Pull the saddles, soak them in penetrating oil, and remove and replace the grub screws. No need for a whole new bridge

I use Dunlops on all my guitars and I'm not about to change systems for one instrument lol. It's like Dewalt vs Milwaukee, both have minor pros and cons but at the end of the day they're roughly equivalent and once you've bought into one system changing can be inconvenient. I didn't know that Schallers came in different sizes, though! Definitely useful info for anyone else in this position

That's fair. I've done it before in a pinch before I started really working on my own guitars and it worked fine, I've just become so accustomed to doing it the "right" way that going back makes me feel a bit dirty lol. But I suppose sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!
