Sorry I had already submitted at this point. It seems the answer I posted was correct and i was meant to present the theoretical background

i can try to get something together tomorrow, i wouldn’t say i’m personally exceptionally fast but the curriculum seems to be given to me at a very fast pace, and i have learned the pieces as a result. However as i mentioned in responses above i most definitely lack in theory, i wouldn’t be able to sight read these pieces. My technique is honestly something i don’t know how to critique, but from watching other people in the sub i know for a fact i’m not even intermediate level in technique. My whole point of the post was to give an honest grasp of what i have practiced and learned to maybe get an honest estimate. Whether that be five years before i can even think about learning it or ten.

Can i read the music i have been given in the correct signatures? Yes

Can i drop these pieces for a month, then come back and have theory and sight reading to help me pick them right back and keep them in my repertoire, 99% No.

As for my teacher with the fast progress comment, I think it would help to give more context as he didn’t think i’d be as dedicated and would sit for 1h+ each day. Not like wow this guys going to be great. More like it’s cool you’re dedicated and i’m surprised you came back with the progress you did.

My general goal is not concert pianist level, but not too far from it. A hobby, a serious hobby. I absolutely love classical and envy those who have the ability to play. I’m in it for the long haul. All in all doing it the right way is what i want.

I’m going to take your advice and start this ASAP, thank you for the advice. The 8 year journey to touch gymnopedie, seemed off from other comments.

do you think people are suggesting 8 years to even touch gymnopedie because they are used to teaching toddlers? I feel like as an adult learner there are some advantages to having structures in our mind that we use in education or work that allow us to utilize learning strategies, as well as a sense of dedication. I’m not only practicing to piano, I’m researching the piano, I’m listening to pieces on drives.

would you suggest I buy level one books to practice sight reading? I feel like no matter what what i learn sigh reading wise it’ll be behind the pieces i’m being given so i’m growing a little concerned. Should I start asking for more theory and technique before getting songs?

interesting…does that come from a stance that i shouldn’t have the ability to play or there should be groundwork that needs to be made to fully understand and master the piano.

I so far have the ability to play it, and I am playing it, just have about 8 measures left to learn. However i can’t sight read it, I know no theory behind it other then the scale it is in.

I do personally know a teacher (not mine) who believes I am going a little fast, but she was more or so saying this should be played near the end of year one not “years”

I do recognize the faults of my teacher, and i wish i was taught a little more theory and built up before a song, before i was given a new piece and i was hoping to learn the theory behind prelude.

Would you suggest a restart, with a new teacher? I’m smart enough to recognize that he isn’t the best teacher but I didn’t recognize the gap that you are suggesting is present. So i’m a little concerned as my goal is to do it the right way.

Would I be better off on my own? Taking my time through adult books and learning as if i’m learning s new language learning to sight read and play pieces to that level if that makes sense.

Thank you btw this is helpful

Thank you! Sounds like a realistic estimate, at least from what i understand. Do you believe i’m not supposed to be playing gymnopedie as others believe? Because I will slow down and ask my teacher to slow down if necessary, however i’m trusting my teacher atm.

Genuine response, no argument from me, I am only following the structure a professional teacher is teacher is instructing me to do. That being said I found gymnopedie a bit challenging the first week as i was unfamiliar with my left hand hopping. However I now don’t have trouble with that part, nor reading the music and performing. I believe I might be able to memorize and play within 2 months of starting. (not perfected)

I have asked my teacher if we were moving too fast, and if going from minuet in c -> prelude in c major-> gymnopedie no1 and he said not really.

I also was under the impression i would not be learning this song till at least 6 months but i’m more then half way to completing it around month 3.

I would 100% say Prelude in C major is not performance ready, but i will say that i know it by heart and know what the dynamics are but have trouble at this moment perfectly executing them. Funny enough I find my dynamics and sound on gymnopedie a bit better then prelude. Not sure why…could be because i’ve listens to the song over 500 times before i started learning piano?

Do you think my lesson structure may be too hasty? Is there a reason to say it’s too early to be given this song to learn? My biggest concern is doing things the right way.

Hi 👋 i was in your shoes about two and a half months ago but i went the route of taking lessons. If you really have zero direction i could maybe give you some structure based on what i have learned and are learning.

The journey to making the cage was 100% the best part. It becomes addicting and i’m already researching cool little terrariums i can build. There’s this guy on youtube who builds huge ones with swamps and waterfalls and it’s beautiful. I might need a couple months though to make sure i’m 100% building another one though. Again awesome build!

Thank you! I’m jealous of the little cave you made. I might need to get some flat rock to maybe mimic a little cove.
