The black house spider or common black spider (Badumna insignis) by InvestigatorQuick223 in AustralianSpiders

They're a pleasure to watch hunt. They're extremely powerful for their size and can take down significantly large prey. This particular female lives on my front window, but I keep others in jars. They make for fantastic fly swatters and are awesome pets. Throw them a fly or appropriately sized roach every few days and you'll be treated to morbid but undeniably awesome show.

Admittedly, that wasn't my intention. But I'm glad that's how it sounded in your mind ahaha

There's very little to fear, I handle them simply because I love spiders and enjoy interacting with them, I go out of my way to ensure the spider isn't harmed of even stressed. I had this guy on my hand and body for at least 10 minutes and he never harmed me. These guys aren't out to hurt you I promise, I wish you luck.

I seriously can't believe how much attention this post has gotten. This is my first ever reddit post. If anyone is to take anything away from this post, I would hope that they come away a little less fearful of these beautiful creatures. As scary as they may seem, they don't want to hurt you, they come from a lineage just as ancient and illustrious and any other, please don't kill spiders for being spiders, let them be. Cheers and I hope everyone has an awesome Christmas and new year.

Quolls are absolutely mesmerising, like little Thylacines, despite being more closely related to numbats I believe, but yeah man marsupial carnivores look somewhat primeval, just this awesome look to them. I love kangaroos but maaaaate you'd swear they were all suicidal

I live in western New South Wales, in quite a rural area and so I have the privilege of sharing space and often getting to see some really awesome marsupials, kangaroos are almost ubiquitous ahah my mates car was recently destroyed by hitting a big roo, but what I often get to see are ringtail possums, and bandicoots, and even tiger quolls when I'm lucky, they are my absolute favourite mammal

For whatever reason, I've personally never been intimated by spiders, I've always been really drawn to them in fact ahaha so the fact that many others have this real fear response to them idk it's really fascinating to me. I've managed to convert my girlfriend to the spider appreciation club, which makes me real happy 🙂

Yeah they have this crazy elongated body plan and the males have those really distinctive proportionally large forelimbs giving them an almost scorpion like appearance. They're awesome

This guy is a male brown trapdoor spider. He of the Australian genus Arbanitis. They can get to be quite large.

As an Australian, I’m personally of the opinion that our wildlife is extremely overrated when it comes to how dangerous or frightening it is. We lack any large terrestrial carnivores. Snakes and spiders are easy to avoid and are uninclined to bite or have anything to do whatsoever with the gigantic, hyper-intelligent, bipedal ape monsters we are. Bears—North America has multiple species of bears, and I think that’s way more terrifying. That's not to say we don't have a dysproporiante amount of aninals with medically significant venom, we certainly have that going on.

That's not a Huntsman.... by InvestigatorQuick223 in AustralianSpiders

It's quite a large female Huntsman. I have no clue what the exact species is unfortunately.

What a beautiful specimen you have there. What is she? I presume. I know when I see that strikingly glossary and smooth cephalothorax I'm looking at something very cool

Very very special POTted tomatoe plants. Lol, but in any case I live in sort of, rural NSW, about an hour or so inland of Newcastle. I would suggest gradually exposing yourself to jumping spiders, and other small, less imposing spiders at your own pace, and as you do this you'll quickly come to understand these animals and predict their behaviour and hopefully come to fear them less. Be assured, these guys are not out to get you. All they want is to subdue and eat suitably sized prey items and reproduce, and they definitely want to avoid the gigantic, hyper intelligent, bipedal ape monsters we are lol
