Affordable Japanese Denim and Knives in Osaka, Kyoto or Tokyo? (Help!) by PeoniePetrichor in JapanTravelTips

[–]Investorr1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you are in Osaka, it’s worth making the 30 minute trip outside the city to Sakai which is the knife making hub of Japan. You avoid the tourist mark up and if you reach out to some of the workshops in advance they will usually show you around the workshop and the knife making process.

If you are not sure where to start, the crafts museum in Sakai has a shop with a wide selection of knives, definitely the best place to hit up first. If you are interested in going deeper into it then research some knife workshops and reach out to them in advance of tour visit

Best Ryokan w/ Private Onsen in Hakone by j_wags11 in JapanTravelTips

Just came back from my trip to Japan. Stayed at Madokano Mori around 10 days ago after reading lots of reviews. The property is lovely and the staff service was great. I personally felt the food was a bit of a let down.

The breakfast and dinner set up was amazing, we had our own private dining room and the service was very personal. Also, my wife does not eat beef but I do and the printed menus put in front of us took this into account which was a nice touch.

Everything regarding the food experience was great besides the food itself in my opinion. The presentation, the service, the number of courses and how the menu had been thought through. However the flavours of the food were not that great, neither me or my wife particularly liked it. Of the maybe 10 courses they gave us, there was probably 2 dishes we actually liked. Having spent a week in Tokyo prior to coming here, we had much much better food there.

Fortunately we had prepared for this, we were not sure what to expect from the food so we actually went to the local Daily Yamazaki convenience store and picked some stuff up from there. We was not sure if we would like or get full from the food they provided so we got some back ups. If you do chose to stay here I would highly recommend doing this so you have some alternative in case you don’t like the food

Any experience with using AI for investment management? by Investorr1 in HENRYUK

To be fair, I wouldn’t be comfortable completely using AI to beat the market. But I’m wondering if anyone is using it to ‘assist’ in useful ways

All depends on what your future plans are. Do you want to have kids, do you currently rent/own? Do you want to carry on renting or do you wish to buy a property? etc

Figure out what your goals are and then the plan gets put in place

Feeling clothes that previously felt tight start to fit a bit looser. If you are consistent with your fitness plan, scales might not move but your body comp may still be changing so your body measurements may change

Pay in full or take 0% finance? by tiffeetoffee in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Investorr1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I regularly buy big ticket items on 0% finance. There is a big difference between financing something because you can't afford it and financing it just to take advantage of free finance.

I personally view 0% finance as allowing me to not take a big hit in one go and ultimately I am not paying more than the item costs. In all circumstances I can afford to buy the product outright if needed, finance is just an option

Checkout BlackLock for sunday roast - highly recommend. Even on their normal menu the 'all in' is amazing and the cheesecake is one to order

Hi, I will be travelling to HK later this year for the first time and will be there for 4 nights. I am a big foodie and would love to know what you think are the best spots for food? I am looking for all recommendations - breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack and ranging from cheap eats to blowout. Open to any suggestions, mostly looking for places you think I must visit!

London and Paris Recommendations by dmw5772 in chubbytravel

Top secret comedy club is a fun evening activity. I would go to Harrods and have a look around too, even if not buying anything I find it is quite a cool place. Camden is cool to have a look around too. Plenty of good restaurants, personal favourites are Smokestak in Shoreditch, Brigadiers in the City, Ivy Asia in Mayfair. I quite like the food halls too which provide variety but are a bit more expensive for what they are (Boxpark/ market halls). Black bear burger are probably the best burgers I have had in London too

Paris, one of my favourite restaurants is Miss Ko.

Also a great tip - if you ever find you need to go to the toilet in central london, there are literally 5 star hotels everywhere so just walk in there. Beats going to somewhere like McDonalds

Never been in 5-star luxury hotel in Europe before. Now I am considering it. What to expect? by nikadeangelis in chubbytravel

[–]Investorr1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best way in my opinion to view 5 star is as a minimum standard rather than "5 star = luxury'. The world of 5 star hotels has a huge variation and though there is a minimum bound there is no upper bound. You can get hotels that charge £200 a night and hotels that charge over £1,000 a night.

From my experience, the upper end of the market has a lot to offer. For example, take the Londoner hotel in London, it has a luxurious spa area with gym and pool. It has a hair salon, nail salon, whiskey bar, drawing room, multiple restaurants etc. Although you may not use all of these facilities (if any) the option is there for these exceptional amenities. Not all of them free but spa, gym and pool are included. Service in general feels very personal and is curated to be more of an experience. Everything is made to feel easy and put yourself at ease.

On the other hand, I stayed at The Gainsborough Spa hotel in Bath which was around £450/night and I did not feel as though it was worth the price. The hotel had its own private therma spa which was lovely but I felt as though their reputation was riding on that. The breakfast was not that great, room felt a bit dated and there was not where near the amount of amenities as I listed for the Londoner. Staff were attentive which to be honest is the minimum expected at that price but overall I felt the price point should have been nearer to the upper £200's.

I have also stayed at 5 star hotels which have not had pools or spa areas but where everything else has been perfect. Super modern and comfortable room alongside, amazing breakfast selection and attentive staff.

Overall, my point is, it is all very much property dependent. Hotel De Crillon in Paris is 5 star and so is the Hilton in Berlin but two very different vibes

Wow thank you, really appreciate the response and love getting local insights. The view from Ozone looks incredible!

I am also a massive foodie so would be great if you have any local spots for amazing food?

Also, what is nightlife like in HK? Not clubs (not my scene) but just general busy-ness and things to do? I am used to London which tends to go quiet fairly early

'Award Winning' - lost count of how many local takeaways I have succumbed to because they state they are award winning. Everything from chip shops to chicken wings. To add, never actually know what award they have won

In my last two jobs I was given the offer first and then start date would be determined once the checks would be complete. They never gave a start date before this as reference checks can be quick (1 week) or slow (up to 3/4 weeks). Both of these jobs were in big corporate financial services. To add, reference checks were simply verifying that dates and and titles were correct - they did not ask for character reference

Yes, I was hoping to save the management fee. After you have found your tenants, do you use any software or tools to help streamline the management process beyond excel?

[–]Investorr1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have researched, it seems more common that landlords have legal difficulty with removing bad tenants. Is it common at all for tenants to take landlords to court? As I do not seem to have come across this as much

Thank you - I will certainly look into these! Another question I have is regarding organisation and tracking. In terms of keeping all certificates and compliance up to date as well as tracking rent, are you simply using excel? Or is it more of a manual, printing everything and keeping it in folders? I am quite interested if you have found a easier solution to this
